The 26-inch overall length (OAL) measurement determines federal firearm classification. A firearm with a rifled barrel under 16 inches and OAL under 26 inches is classified as a pistol (if no stock) or short-barreled rifle (if stocked, requiring NFA registration). A firearm with OAL over 26 inches but a barrel under 16 inches, with no stock, falls into a gray area sometimes called a "firearm" or "other" under federal definitions. OAL is measured from the end of the barrel (or permanently attached muzzle device) to the farthest extension of the stock or buffer tube. This measurement affects which stocks, braces, and vertical grips are legal on your build.
