Underwood
Non-expanding .380 ACP defensive load using a Lehigh Defense solid-copper Xtreme Defense projectile. The 68gr fluted bullet runs 1,300 fps from Underwood's standard-pressure load.
Underwood 380 ACP 68gr Xtreme Defender takes a different approach from conventional .380 hollow points. Instead of relying on expansion, the solid-copper Lehigh Defense Xtreme Defense projectile uses flutes at the nose to redirect fluid as the bullet passes through soft tissue. That gives shooters a non-expanding option for pocket pistols where hollow point clogging and short-barrel velocity loss are common concerns.
Underwood lists this standard-pressure SKU 638 load at 1,300 fps and 255 ft-lbs with a 68gr copper bullet, nickel-plated brass case, flash-suppressed powder, and 20-round boxes. The company describes the Xtreme Defender as designed for penetration up to 18 inches while staying inside FBI guidance, but real-world performance still depends on barrel length and the specific pistol.
The tradeoff versus conventional JHPs is cost and feeding geometry. It usually costs more than Federal Punch and most Hornady or Speer hollow points. The sharp fluted ogive also makes function testing especially important in small .380 pistols.
