Overview

The RMA 1062-1063 Gen 2 is the polyethylene rifle plate that anchors RMA's hard-armor lineup. At 3.1 lb in size medium, it weighs less than half what a comparable ceramic or steel Level III plate weighs, and the all-polyethylene construction means it floats — useful for boat, water, or anywhere the plate might end up submerged.

The plate is tested to the new NIJ 0101.07 RF1 protocol, which is the equivalent of the old NIJ 0101.06 Level III but tested under the updated 2023 standard. RF1 stops 7.62x51 NATO M80 ball, 7.62x39 mild steel core (AK), 5.56 M193, and the full handgun threat spectrum at standard rifle distances. It is not rated for armor-piercing (.30-06 AP, M855A1), which is what separates a Level III plate from a Level IV.

Construction is SAPI/ESAPI multi-curve with a 600D water-resistant cover. The "1062-1063" designation refers to the size pair — RMA uses model numbers tied to size class rather than a single SKU per plate type. Real-world use case: lightweight setup for civilians who want rifle-rated protection without the 6-8 lb ceramic weight, or as a backer in an in-conjunction-with (ICW) soft armor system.

Key Features

  • 100% UHMWPE polyethylene construction
  • NIJ 0101.07 RF1 tested (Level III equivalent)
  • 3.1 lb in size medium — lightest hard rifle plate class
  • Positively buoyant (floats in water)
  • SAPI/ESAPI multi-curve cut, 600D water-resistant cover
  • Stops M80 NATO, 7.62x39 MSC, M193, all handgun
  • Made in Centerville, IA by RMA Defense

Pros

  • +Lightest hard rifle plate available at this protection level
  • +Floats in water — only material class that does this
  • +Multi-curve fit conforms to torso better than flat plates
  • +Tested to the new NIJ 0101.07 standard

Cons

  • Will not stop AP or M855A1 (need Level III+ or IV for those)
  • Polyethylene is heat-sensitive; do not leave in hot vehicles
  • Tested-to-standard, not on the official NIJ CPL list yet
  • Higher per-plate cost than ceramic Level IV from same maker
