Overview

The ESRT (Enhanced Special Rifle Threat) is RMA's answer to the M855A1 problem. The current US military 5.56 round is M855A1, which uses a steel-tipped penetrator that punches through most Level III plates rated only against M80 ball and M193. The ESRT is engineered specifically to defeat M855A1 plus the older M855 "green tip," plus 7.62x39 mild steel core, plus M80 NATO, in a 0.5-inch package at 4.99 lb in medium.

That half-inch thickness is the headline. A typical Level IV ceramic plate runs 0.75-0.85 inches; the ESRT compresses ceramic strike face and polyethylene backer into 0.5 inches without giving up the III+ special-threat coverage. For shooters running a low-profile chest rig or running plate carriers under a jacket, the thickness difference is meaningful.

The "special threat" tier sits between NIJ Level III and Level IV on the protection ladder. NIJ does not certify a III+ tier under 0101.06 — it is a manufacturer designation backed by independent ballistic testing. The ESRT is tested to defeat M855A1, M855, 7.62x39 MSC, and M80 NATO in multi-curve format with a 600D water-resistant cover. It is the right plate when your threat model is rifle-rated patrol fire (5.56 ball is the modern threat) but you do not need .30-06 AP coverage.
