Cold Steel
6-inch SK-5 carbon steel fixed blade modeled on the knife used in Navy SEAL BUD/S training. Tough, simple, and cheap enough to actually use.
The Cold Steel SRK, or Survival Rescue Knife, earned its reputation as a standard-issue training knife in Navy SEAL BUD/S, and the SK-5 version brings that pedigree to a price almost anyone can justify. SK-5 is a Japanese high-carbon steel comparable to 1080, which means it sharpens easily on basic stones and takes a genuinely keen edge. The trade-off is corrosion: a quick wipe-down after use keeps the Black Tuff-Ex coating and exposed edge rust-free.
The 6-inch blade rides on 5mm stock, thick enough to baton through wrist-sized wood, pry, and dig without flexing or chipping. The clip point gives you a usable tip for detail work and field dressing, while the full-length tang and Kray-Ex handle keep the knife controllable when wet or gloved. The Secure-Ex sheath locks the knife with an audible click and accepts belt or MOLLE carry.
This is not a safe-queen blade. It is a working knife that shrugs off abuse, and at its regular street price it costs less than the sharpening stones some people put on their premium knives. For a truck kit, a range bag, or a first serious fixed blade, the SRK is the easy answer.
