Roster presence does not guarantee transfer eligibility. Your dealer must confirm roster status and apply all other California and federal rules.

The answer

Match the exact DOJ configuration

Step 1

Search the full model text

Use the full model description and identifying number shown on the handgun, box, or dealer listing. Family names can cover several different roster configurations.

Step 2

Compare the listed details

Check caliber, barrel length, materials, and expiration. The DOJ detail page is linked from every result.

Step 3

Confirm with the dealer

Roster certification covers ordinary dealer-sale eligibility. The dealer still applies the rest of California and federal transfer law.

What the roster means

Dealer-sale certification, not a blanket ownership verdict

California DOJ says a handgun model generally must pass its firing, safety, and drop tests and be certified before it may be manufactured in California, imported for sale, lent, given, kept for sale, or offered for sale. Other California rules can still prohibit a transaction or configuration.

DOJ lists private-party transfers, curio or relic handguns, certain single-action revolvers, and pawn or consignment returns as exemptions from the roster requirement. An exempt transfer still has to satisfy every other law that applies.

Common questions

California handgun roster FAQ

What does the California handgun roster control?

The roster controls which handgun models may ordinarily be manufactured in California, imported for sale, offered for sale, given, or lent. A roster entry is not a general ruling that every version of that handgun is legal in every situation.

Does a handgun family name prove that my model is on the roster?

No. Match the complete DOJ model text, caliber, barrel length, materials, and other listed details. A different size, finish, SKU, or configuration in the same product family may have its own roster status.

What does the asterisk or Boland label mean?

California DOJ uses an asterisk for a handgun added under the court order in Boland v. Bonta. It identifies how that exact row entered the roster; it does not remove the roster or override other California firearm laws.

Are any handgun transfers exempt from the roster requirement?

Yes. California DOJ lists private-party transfers, curio or relic handguns, certain single-action revolvers, and pawn or consignment returns as exempt from the roster requirement. Other transfer and possession rules still apply.
