The Wilson Combat +2 Magazine Extension (model SGETU2) is the most-installed 870 capacity upgrade and the right default choice for almost every defensive 870 build. The factory Remington 870 Express ships with a 4-round magazine tube; the Express Tactical ships with a 5-round tube; the Police Magnum ships with 6 rounds. The Wilson +2 takes each of those configurations up by two rounds, so an Express Tactical reaches 7+1 and a Police 8+1 without a barrel clamp.
The "no clamp required" detail is the reason Wilson dominates the 870 market over Nordic and Choate. Wilson's tube is single-piece parkerized steel, machined and threaded so it screws directly onto the factory tube without a reinforcing clamp or bracket on standard 870 magazine tubes. Nordic's MXT line is universal-fit and works on the 870, but Nordic recommends removing the magazine tube dimples on most 870 production runs for proper function, which is a hassle that Wilson sidesteps. For shooters who want a "buy it, install it in five minutes, never touch it again" upgrade, Wilson is the right call.
The kit includes an extra-power magazine spring tuned to the longer tube length plus a bright orange high-visibility follower. The follower upgrade alone is worth installing even without the extension, because the factory 870 follower is a black plastic cap that disappears in low light and makes a press-check ambiguous. The extra-power spring is non-negotiable: the factory spring is not long enough to reliably feed shells out of an extended tube under recoil, and substituting a longer factory spring is not a real solution.
Wilson lists fitment for the 870, 1100, and 11-87 with 2.75-inch chambers. It is NOT compatible with the 870 SuperMag (3.5-inch chamber) without the SuperMag-specific Wilson tube. For shooters running 3-inch defensive loads, capacity drops by one round (Express Tactical to 6+1 instead of 7+1). The single-piece construction means the tube is reversible: if you ever need to return the gun to factory configuration, unscrew the extension, swap back to the factory cap, and the magazine tube is unmodified.
