IWI ARAD 5: Piston-Driven AR-15 Launches from Tennessee at $1,499

article · news · Apr 11, 2026

Overview

The Tavor X95 achieves what no carbine-length AR can: a 16.5-inch cold hammer forged barrel in a 26.125-inch overall package. The bullpup layout moves the action behind the trigger group, eliminating the dead space of a conventional stock and delivering full-velocity 5.56 performance in a platform that handles like a short-barreled rifle without the NFA paperwork. IWI's current US line notes that new production is 5.56 NATO, while older .300 BLK and 9mm configurations remain part of the broader X95 history. The X95 is the standard-issue service rifle of the Israel Defense Forces, a distinction earned through sustained operational use across varied environments and conditions.

Capability Profile

Pros

+16.5-inch barrel in a 26.1-inch package beats any comparable AR-15 carbine for maneuverability
+Long-stroke piston system runs suppressed and with dirty or varied ammunition
+Fully ambidextrous controls including ejection port conversion
+IDF service rifle with extensive documented operational reliability

Cons

−Heavier than comparable AR-pattern rifles at 7.9 lbs unloaded
−Aftermarket accessory ecosystem is limited compared to AR-15
−Bullpup trigger linkage produces a longer, heavier pull than direct AR trigger groups
−Balance point is rearward; takes deliberate adjustment for shooters coming from AR platforms
