Best Shotgun Lights for Home Defense: Pump & Rail Picks

Buy a replacement forend light when you want the light, battery, and switches built into one part for your exact pump model, and a rail-mounted light when you want more choice in beam, battery, and switch layout. A rail light keeps the factory forend only on a shotgun that already has a rail; on a pump with a smooth forend, it means fitting an M-LOK replacement forend first.

The Streamlight TL-Racker for the Mossberg 500/590 (item 69600, $165.49) shows the forend approach. It replaces the factory forend, so the LED, the ambidextrous momentary and constant-on pad, and the two CR123A batteries sit in the part your hand already holds, with no remote cord to route. It puts out 1,000 lumens and 20,000 candela to a listed 283 meters and runs 1.5 hours. The tradeoff is fit: item 69600 only fits 12-gauge Mossberg 500/590 models with the 7 3/4-inch action slide. Its 12.1-ounce weight with batteries is the complete forend, so compare it with the factory forend it replaces rather than with the weight a rail light adds.

On a railed shotgun or an M-LOK forend, the Streamlight ProTac HL-X Pro System ($140.24) is the broad package: an integrated MIL-STD-1913 clamp plus an M-LOK mount, a Jack-Cap that works as a push-button tail switch or with the included remote pressure switch, and a choice of one SL-B26 rechargeable pack or two CR123A batteries. The Streamlight TLR RM 1 HL-X ($213.49) cuts weight to 3.12 ounces with its SL-B9 pack and still gives independent push-button and remote pressure switches, but it attaches only to a 1913 rail. Either way, the shotgun has to supply the rail, from the factory or through an M-LOK replacement forend, and the mounted light has to clear the barrel, magazine tube, and moving forend.

Every replacement forend light in this guide is model-specific, so match your shotgun to the maker's fit list before ordering. Rail lights depend on the mounting point instead: the shotgun needs the Picatinny or M-LOK interface the light requires, from the factory or from an M-LOK replacement forend made for that model.

Streamlight sells three TL-Racker versions. Item 69600 fits 12-gauge Mossberg 500/590 models with the 7 3/4-inch action slide ($165.49), item 69601 fits the 12-gauge Remington 870 ($159.49), and item 69602 fits the Mossberg 590 Shockwave with a support strap in the box ($155.49). Streamlight's product page excludes the Remington 870 Express Supermag. Nightstick lists the SFL-11WL ($168.45) for 12-gauge Mossberg 500, 590, 590A1, and Shockwave pumps and excludes the 590R, 590RM, 590R Standoff, and 590RM Standoff. The SFL-13WL ($168.45) fits 12-gauge Remington 870 and TAC-14 pumps. Both Nightstick forends ship with an action tube nut wrench, hand strap, battery carrier, and two CR123 batteries, and the SFL-11WL adds a spacer.

Compare candela alongside lumens on a tactical shotgun light: lumens measure total output, while candela sets the intensity of the beam's center, how far it reaches, and how well it cuts through smoke or oncoming light. Indoors, a beam with usable spill matters as much as peak candela. The SureFire M340DFT-PRO ($349.99) makes 650 lumens on its included SF18350 but reaches 95,000 candela and a listed 616 meters. The 1,200-lumen Nightstick forends list 10,315 candela and 203 meters.

Battery choice changes the numbers on most of these lights. The ProTac HL-X Pro keeps 1,000 lumens on either power source and runs 1.75 hours on the SL-B26 or 1.25 hours on CR123A. The TLR RM 1 HL-X makes 1,000 lumens and 22,000 candela for 30 minutes on its SL-B9, then 500 lumens and 11,000 candela for 1.5 hours on one CR123A. The M340DFT-PRO runs 45 minutes at full output on the SF18350 and drops to 350 lumens and 55,000 candela on one 123A. The SureFire M640DFT-PRO ($334.49) makes 700 lumens and 100,000 candela for 2.75 hours on its SF18650 and 600 lumens and 90,000 candela on two 123A batteries. The INFORCE WMLx Gen 3 ($149.97) runs 1,100 lumens and 25,000 candela for two hours on two 123A batteries.

Controls decide how the light gets used under stress. The HL-X Pro System's Jack-Cap works as a push-button tail switch or feeds the remote pressure switch, but water protection drops from IP67 to IP54 with the remote installed.
