Effective close quarters without breaking the bank
The Budget CQB is an entry-level close-quarters AR-15 built on a PSA PA-15 16-inch carbine, aimed at new shooters and anyone setting up a capable home-defense rifle without overspending. It layers a Sig Romeo5 red dot, a Streamlight ProTac HL-X weapon light, and reliable Magpul and BCM furniture onto a proven budget rifle.
This build prioritizes the two upgrades that matter most for defensive use, a fast optic and a bright light for target identification, and keeps everything else practical. The 16-inch platform is maneuverable enough for indoor use, the red dot drives quick both-eyes-open shooting, and the parts list stays firmly in value territory.

Base platform
For a first defensive AR, spending on the optic and light before anything else is the correct order, and this build reflects that. The Sig Romeo5 has been the budget red dot benchmark for years: a 2 MOA dot, MOTAC motion activation that wakes the optic when you grab the rifle, and a 40,000-hour battery on a single CR2032 so it is always ready. It carries an Aimpoint Micro footprint, which gives a clean upgrade path later without changing mounts.
The Streamlight ProTac HL-X is the light that makes the rifle usable in the dark. It puts out 1,000 lumens and 50,000 candela with a 447-meter beam, runs on either a rechargeable pack or CR123A cells, and ships complete with an M-LOK mount and a pressure switch. For home defense, positive target identification is non-negotiable, and the HL-X delivers premium-tier output at a value price.
The rest of the build spends where it counts and saves where it does not. The BCM Gunfighter grip and Magpul CTR stock are proven, inexpensive furniture upgrades over basic carbine parts, and the PMAG Gen M3 is the industry-standard magazine. Building on the PSA PA-15 keeps the host rifle affordable while leaving a standard AR-15 parts path open for future upgrades.
Optics & Sighting

$139.99 MSRP
The Sig Romeo5 is the value red dot benchmark: a 2 MOA dot, MOTAC motion activation that turns the optic on the instant you move the rifle, IPX-7 waterproofing, and a 40,000-hour battery life. It ships with high and low risers and uses an Aimpoint Micro footprint, so it is ready to co-witness and easy to upgrade around later.
The Holosun AEMS Core X2 is an enclosed-emitter red dot that resists debris and weather better, a worthwhile step up for a dedicated defensive rifle.
The Primary Arms SLx 3x MicroPrism has an etched reticle that works for shooters with astigmatism who see a red dot as a smear.
Illumination

The Streamlight ProTac HL-X puts 1,000 lumens and 50,000 candela downrange to 447 meters, runs dual-fuel on a rechargeable pack or CR123A cells, and comes complete with both an M-LOK mount and a pressure switch. It is the value king of weapon lights, delivering the identification capability home defense demands without premium pricing.
The SureFire M640DFT-PRO Turbo adds far more candela for tight, long-throw illumination and SureFire's build quality.
Pistol Grips

The BCM Gunfighter Mod 3 uses a reduced grip angle suited to a modern squared stance, with aggressive texturing and an internal storage compartment. It is an inexpensive, comfortable upgrade over the basic grip PSA ships.
The Magpul MOE-K2's steeper 17-degree angle suits shooters who prefer a more vertical hold.
Stocks & Braces

$59.95 at Optics Planet · In stock
The Magpul CTR is the value benchmark stock at 8.8 ounces, with a friction lock that removes the wobble common to basic M4 stocks. It gives a solid, repeatable shoulder position for fast, accurate close-range shooting.
The B5 Enhanced SOPMOD adds a wider cheek weld and dual battery storage for spare optic and light cells.
Magazines & Feeding

$13.95 MSRP
The Magpul PMAG 30 Gen M3 is the industry-standard 30-round magazine, with a four-way anti-tilt follower and crush-resistant polymer that has proven reliable across countless rifles. It is the default magazine for any serious AR-15.
