Budget CQB

Effective close quarters without breaking the bank

PSA PA-15 16" Carbine5 componentsCurrent build cost: $979.36Prices as of Jul 2, 2026

The Budget CQB is an entry-level close-quarters AR-15 built on a PSA PA-15 16-inch carbine, aimed at new shooters and anyone setting up a capable home-defense rifle without overspending. It layers a Sig Romeo5 red dot, a Streamlight ProTac HL-X weapon light, and reliable Magpul and BCM furniture onto a proven budget rifle.

This build prioritizes the two upgrades that matter most for defensive use, a fast optic and a bright light for target identification, and keeps everything else practical. The 16-inch platform is maneuverable enough for indoor use, the red dot drives quick both-eyes-open shooting, and the parts list stays firmly in value territory.

Base platform

Why this build

For a first defensive AR, spending on the optic and light before anything else is the correct order, and this build reflects that. The Sig Romeo5 has been the budget red dot benchmark for years: a 2 MOA dot, MOTAC motion activation that wakes the optic when you grab the rifle, and a 40,000-hour battery on a single CR2032 so it is always ready. It carries an Aimpoint Micro footprint, which gives a clean upgrade path later without changing mounts.

The Streamlight ProTac HL-X is the light that makes the rifle usable in the dark. It puts out 1,000 lumens and 50,000 candela with a 447-meter beam, runs on either a rechargeable pack or CR123A cells, and ships complete with an M-LOK mount and a pressure switch. For home defense, positive target identification is non-negotiable, and the HL-X delivers premium-tier output at a value price.

The rest of the build spends where it counts and saves where it does not. The BCM Gunfighter grip and Magpul CTR stock are proven, inexpensive furniture upgrades over basic carbine parts, and the PMAG Gen M3 is the industry-standard magazine. Building on the PSA PA-15 keeps the host rifle affordable while leaving a standard AR-15 parts path open for future upgrades.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I build a capable home-defense AR for under this budget?
Yes. Starting from a PSA PA-15 16-inch carbine and adding a Sig Romeo5 red dot and a Streamlight ProTac HL-X light covers the two upgrades that matter most for defense, a fast optic and a bright light for target identification, while keeping the total well within an entry-level budget. The BCM grip, Magpul CTR stock, and PMAG magazine are inexpensive, proven parts that round out the rifle.
Is a 16-inch barrel too long for indoor home defense?
No. A 16-inch AR-15 is a common and effective home-defense length; it is maneuverable enough for indoor use while keeping full 5.56 velocity and staying legal with no NFA paperwork. Shorter barrels handle tighter indoors but give up velocity, and any barrel under 16 inches without a pinned muzzle device makes the rifle a short-barreled rifle, which requires ATF registration even though the federal making tax is now zero.
Why a red dot instead of an LPVO for CQB?
For close-quarters and home-defense distances, a 1x red dot like the Sig Romeo5 is faster than an LPVO: there is no magnification to manage, the dot is instantly visible with both eyes open, and there is no eyebox to find under stress. An LPVO earns its place when you also need magnified precision at distance. For a dedicated CQB build, the red dot is the faster and cheaper answer.
Do I need a weapon light for home defense?
Yes. A weapon light is essential for home defense because you must positively identify a target before firing, and that is impossible in the dark. The Streamlight ProTac HL-X delivers 1,000 lumens and 50,000 candela, enough to identify and, if necessary, disorient a threat, and it ships with the mount and pressure switch you need to run it. It is one of the two non-negotiable upgrades on a defensive rifle.
