A 50 yard zero puts the bullet back on the line of sight near 200 yards, which is why it is the default for a 1x dot on a carbine. Dial the turrets onto the paper at 50, fire a group, then push the distance out and read what that same zero does at 100, 200, and 300.

Enclosed 1x40 rifle red dot whose reticle auto-switches when an AMR magnifier swings in
It's a solid optic. A little chunkier than the micros here, but not enough to matter. Ours runs on an MCX with a Sig magnifier behind it, which is what the AMR reticle switching is for. The clear flip covers are better than they sound. It was raining at a match, the front glass was smudged and beaded up, and flipping the covers down gave us a clean surface to shoot through instead of stopping to wipe it off.

Compact red dot with ballistic circle dot reticle and MOTAC
Also solid. The buttons are big enough to hit with gloves on, the turrets are capped, and the torque spec is printed on the battery cap. Swapping the mount height was annoying though. We went from the standard co-witness to the lower 1/3 and are pretty sure we stripped a screw doing it.

Ours is on a Knight's Armament SR-15. The window is the same size as the AEMS Pro X2's, and we shot the two back to back on the same rifle. The Osight's 65 MOA circle was quicker to pick up. We didn't time it, so that's an impression, but it surprised us. It's 6.7 oz with the mount in the box, almost four ounces lighter than the AEMS with its mount, and it takes Aimpoint Micro mounts. Two knocks: the ring flattens out if you push it toward the top edge of the window, and the 83,000 hour battery number is for the dot alone. Circle-dot is 15,000. For the money, nothing else here gets you this window.
Gold Standard Reliability
Premium red dot sight with 50,000 hour battery life
The dial kind of sucks. It's stiff, and there are four night vision settings sitting below the daylight ones, so you have to crank it a long way to get somewhere usable. We'd rather just flip it on when we pick the rifle up. If you leave it on all the time it doesn't matter, and with 50,000 hours of battery that's clearly the idea. Was it worth the money? Not really. It works and it'll keep working, but you're paying for the name.

Premium enclosed reflex sight with multi-reticle system, solar failsafe, and 1000G shock rating
Holosun sent us this one. It's the newer one and we haven't put many rounds through it yet, so take it as a first look. The window is great. Big, square, and it doesn't feel like looking down a tube. The controls and features are good for the price.
Best First Red Dot
Updated budget red dot with MOTAC shake-awake and improved glass
Ours is the original Romeo 5, not the Gen 2 ranked above. Same housing and same Aimpoint Micro T1/T2 footprint, so mounts and handling carry over. Sig changed the internals in 2024: better coatings that cut the blue tint, a smoother MOTAC wake, and new seals. Ours lives on a 9mm direct blowback PCC, which is harder on an optic than most ARs, and it's been completely reliable. It's a red dot. It's simple and it works. Buy the Gen 2 if you're buying today.
The Holographic Option
Holographic weapon sight with night vision compatibility and quick detach mount
Two problems with it. It's 11.2 oz on a rifle that was already heavy, and you feel it. And there's no shake-awake, so it's off unless you remembered to turn it on, which means it's never on when you need it. The only reason it's still on that gun is night vision. Nothing else here is close through a tube, and the big window is most of that.

The Aimpoint Micro T2 is the gold standard, but at $986 it's a hard sell when competitors offer comparable specs for less.
Verdict: If your life depends on your optic, the Aimpoint T2 is still the safest bet with decades of combat-proven reliability. The Aimpoint Duty RDS gives you the same brand reliability for $300 less. The Sig Romeo 4T Pro offers more features than any Aimpoint at a lower price with rugged duty controls. Sig also sells a titanium-shrouded ROMEO8T-AMR for patrol rifles and contractor guns that take real abuse. The Holosun ARO EVO delivers 90% of the T2's capability at 20% of the cost with solar backup the Aimpoints lack.
This is one of the most common questions in AR15 optics. The short answer: Red dots are better for most users. Holographic sights like the EOTech EXPS3 offer advantages in specific scenarios, but red dots dominate in battery life, weight, and cost. Neither design is truly parallax free; the 3D red dot cutaway shows how the coated lens puts the dot at infinity and why it still drifts a little as your head moves off center.
Verdict: Red dots are better. Period. EOTech holographic sights have delamination issues and aren't recommended for duty use. The new EXPS3 HD may address this with shake-awake and all-aluminum construction, but it lacks long-term data. For everyone else, buy a quality red dot like the Sig Romeo 4T Pro, Aimpoint T2, or any Holosun. Better battery life, lighter, more reliable, cheaper.
