Charging handle and gas diversion block that turn a mil-spec direct impingement AR-15 into a manually operated straight-pull bolt action.
The Kali Key AR-15 Bolt-Action System converts a mil-spec direct impingement AR-15 into a manually operated, straight-pull bolt-action rifle. The kit is a replacement charging handle, a Kali Key gas key (the maker calls it a gas diversion block), and two mounting screws. The diversion block goes on the bolt carrier where the factory gas key sat, so the carrier is no longer driven rearward by gas after each shot. The shooter works the action through the charging handle, which slides onto the block from the side, to extract, eject, and chamber every round. Nothing on the gas system, barrel, or receiver is removed or machined.
Fitment is narrow. Kali Key lists it for mil-spec direct impingement AR-15 rifles only and states it does not work with piston systems. Its instructions say the system is designed for HPT and MPI mil-spec bolts and carriers, and the carrier needs gas key guide grooves for the block to seat. The kit ships without a bolt carrier group, so the factory carrier's staked gas key has to come off; Kali Key also sells a version bundled with a black nitride BCG for owners who do not want to de-stake their own carrier. The current generation uses a 7075 aluminum rod with a hard coat anodized finish, a patent-pending blow-back gas trap, revised geometry meant to fit more uppers and iron sights, and a revised handle-to-rod attachment.
The commitment is permanent at the carrier. Kali Key instructs owners to attach the diversion block with permanent threadlocker (Loctite 271 is the example given) at a maximum of 40 in-lb, and says it should not be removed once installed, so switching the rifle back to semi-automatic means keeping a separate, standard BCG and charging handle. The maker also warns that carbon builds up faster inside the upper and calls for generous lubrication every 500 rounds; removing the bolt's three gas rings is an optional step it lists for smoother cycling. The LO-PRO version uses the same gas key with a smaller handle that feels closer to a mil-spec charging handle.
