Benchmade
USA-made 3.24" S30V drop point with the AXIS lock and Grivory scales. The defining premium-light EDC of the last decade.
The Bugout 535 is the knife that defined the modern "premium-light" EDC category. Before its 2017 release, the assumption was that a knife with a real American steel and a real lock weighed at least 3 oz. The Bugout shipped at 1.85 oz with a CPM-S30V blade and AXIS lock, and the entire industry chased it for the next five years.
The recipe is the same as the Mini Bugout but scaled up. The 3.24" blade is the version most people want, longer for slicing larger items (apples, cardboard, longer rope), with a more usable belly. The trade-off is legality: 3.24" exceeds the carry limit in NYC, Boston, parts of California, and various other jurisdictions. If you carry across state lines or in restrictive cities, the Mini Bugout 533 (2.82") is the safer choice.
What makes the 535 the "default premium EDC recommendation" isn't any single feature, it's the combination. CPM-S30V is enough steel for real cutting tasks. The AXIS lock is mechanically excellent and ambidextrous. The Grivory scales are light and grippy. The Benchmade LifeSharp program will sharpen the knife for free for as long as you own it (mail it in, they return it scary-sharp). The pocket clip is a deep-carry style that hides the knife. None of those things are unique on their own; the package is the moat.
