Civivi
2.96" D2 flipper with caged ceramic ball bearings and G10 scales. The benchmark for sub-$60 EDC since 2018.
The Civivi Elementum has been the default answer to "what's the best EDC under $60" for the better part of a decade, and the formula still works. D2 is a semi-stainless tool steel that holds an edge through cardboard, plastic strapping, and rope significantly longer than the 8Cr13MoV found at this price tier. The trade-off is corrosion resistance, D2 will spot if neglected after slicing acidic fruit, but a wipe-down at the end of the day handles it.
The action is the standout feature for the price. Civivi runs caged ceramic ball bearings on the pivot, not phosphor-bronze washers, which means the flipper deploys with the kind of authority you typically only get on knives twice the price. The G10 scales sit over a steel liner with a steel back spacer for rigidity, and the liner lock engages with positive lock-up and zero blade play in either direction.
At 2.89 oz and 4.03" closed, the Elementum disappears in a pocket. The 2.96" blade keeps it under the 3" threshold most municipal ordinances use as a cutoff, which matters if you carry across jurisdictions.
