Smith Enterprise
Two-piece nitrided-steel brake that tames .308 recoil while matching the external profile of the USGI flash suppressor.
The M1A is a hard-recoiling .308, and the Smith Enterprise Good Iron is the brake most serious M14/M1A shooters reach for to settle it down. Smith Enterprise developed the Good Iron for rapid follow-up shots with the 7.62 NATO service rifle, and it cuts muzzle rise and felt recoil noticeably without the harsh side-blast of an open-port competition brake. It matches the external profile of the USGI flash suppressor, so the rifle keeps its service-rifle silhouette. Current CMP M14 Heritage rules bar recoil-reducing muzzle brakes, so verify your match's rules before competing with one.
The brake is a two-piece design machined from 8620 steel with a 60 RC surface hardness and a salt-bath nitride finish for corrosion resistance. The rear mount is cut from 1144 Stressproof cold-drawn bar stock for durability under the M1A's stout impulse. It mounts on the M1A's splined barrel and is retained by the castle nut, the same interface as the factory flash suppressor.
A note on suppressor plans: the M1A's muzzle is not 5/8x24, and the factory gas-lock front sight base complicates direct can mounting. Shooters going suppressed typically replace the gas-lock front sight base with an SEI unit or run a SOCOM-specific thread adapter rather than relying on a brake. For shooters who simply want less recoil and a clean service-rifle silhouette, the Good Iron is the answer.
