Overview

The M&P 380 Shield EZ is the pistol that defined the easy-rack category. Smith & Wesson built it around a single brief: anyone, regardless of grip strength, should be able to rack the slide, load the magazine, and run it under stress. The hammer-fired action uses a substantially lighter recoil spring than any striker-fired pocket pistol, dropping slide-rack force into a range that arthritic hands and stroke recovery patients can manage. For shooters who literally cannot rack a Glock 43 or SIG P365, the 380 EZ is the difference between owning a defensive pistol and owning a paperweight.

The 8-round single-stack magazines include load-assist tabs on both sides of the follower, the same system later adopted by the 9mm EZ. Pinch the tabs, drop the round in, release. No thumb burn, no fighting the last two rounds. The 18.5 oz weight and full-size grip soak up the already-mild .380 recoil, making this one of the softest-shooting defensive pistols at any price.

The base model retails at $399 with no manual thumb safety. The thumb-safety variant adds a frame-mounted safety lever for shooters who prefer that mechanical layer; the Performance Center ported variant runs $499 and reduces muzzle flip further. All variants share the same grip safety and load-assist mags.
