Esbit
Pocket-size folding stove that runs on solid fuel tablets. 6.5 oz total with fuel tabs included. No moving parts, no fuel to spill.
The Esbit folding stove represents the most robust, failure-resistant cooking option for emergency kits. It consists of two galvanized steel panels that fold together into a flat package roughly the size of a deck of cards. Open the panels, place a solid fuel tablet in the tray, light it, and set your pot on top. There are no valves, no gaskets, no piezo igniters, and no pressurized fuel canisters to fail, leak, or expire.
Esbit's solid fuel tablets (hexamine-based) have an effectively unlimited shelf life when kept in their sealed foil wrappers. They light easily with a match or lighter, burn with a hot, nearly invisible flame for approximately 12-15 minutes per tablet, and leave minimal residue. One tablet brings 500ml of water to a boil in roughly 8-10 minutes depending on altitude and wind conditions. The fuel tabs are also individually wrapped, waterproof in their packaging, and safe to store in any orientation without spill risk.
The trade-offs are real: slower boil times than canister stoves, less heat output, and the inability to simmer or adjust flame intensity. The Esbit is not a primary cooking system. It is the last-resort, always-works backup that sits in the bottom of your kit for decades and performs on the day nothing else does. Pair it with a Jetboil Flash for a two-tier cooking strategy: Jetboil as primary, Esbit as redundancy.
