Katadyn
EPA-registered water purification tablets that kill viruses, bacteria, and cysts. 30-tablet pack, 4-hour treatment time for full purification.
Katadyn Micropur MP1 tablets fill the critical gap that portable filters miss: virus removal. While hollow fiber filters like the Sawyer Squeeze and LifeStraw handle bacteria and protozoa, they cannot remove viruses. In contaminated municipal water scenarios (broken infrastructure, flooding), viral contamination is a real concern. Chlorine dioxide, the active ingredient in MP1 tablets, kills all three categories of waterborne pathogens.
Each tablet treats 1 liter of water. For bacteria and viruses, the treatment time is 15 minutes. For the hardiest pathogen, Cryptosporidium, the full 4-hour treatment time is necessary. This makes tablets slower than filters for immediate hydration, but they provide a more complete purification profile. The ideal approach in an emergency is to filter water first (removing particulates, bacteria, and protozoa) and then drop in an MP1 tablet for virus protection while you handle other tasks.
The tablets have a 5-year shelf life when stored in their individual foil packets, making them excellent long-term emergency kit items. They add virtually no weight or bulk. At 30 tablets per pack, a single purchase provides a month of daily water treatment for one person. Unlike iodine-based treatments, chlorine dioxide leaves minimal taste or odor when used as directed.
