Overview

Blackbeard solves one problem and solves it completely: AR-15 dry fire normally means running the charging handle after every press, which turns a drill into a chore. Blackbeard replaces the bolt carrier group with a unit that resets the hammer, and supplies power through an AR-form magazine. Installation is the same twenty seconds as any BCG swap, and the rifle then takes up to ten dry-fire presses per second.

It is not a trigger. The rifle keeps its own fire-control group with the same weight, break, and reset, which is the point: you are practicing on the trigger you will actually shoot. The BCG works with both direct-impingement and piston AR-15s and is chamber-independent, so a 223/5.56, 300 BLK, or 6.8 SPC upper all behave the same. Laser variants add a point-of-aim signal at 650 nm red, 520 nm green, or 780 nm infrared, all Class 3R.

The difference from BlackbeardX is the sensor. BlackbeardX puts a Mantis motion sensor in the powered magazine and reports muzzle movement, timing, and transitions through the app. The original Blackbeard resets and lases but does not measure, and the no-laser configuration is the cheapest way into an AR-15 reset system Mantis sells. Mantis also publishes a real incompatibility list here: forced reset triggers and super safety systems are out, as are 22 LR firearms, the Timney DH3, the Fostech Echo 2, and the PSA Custom Single Stage Drop-in, with no guarantee on TriggerTech triggers, Colt pinned-sear-block lowers, or 80 percent lowers. The kit does not include a Laser Academy access code.

Key Features

  • Drop-in BCG resets the AR-15's existing trigger after every press
  • Powered AR-form magazine, no modification to the rifle
  • Up to 10 resets per second for failure drills and transitions
  • Works with direct-impingement and piston AR-15s
  • Chamber-independent across 223/5.56, 300 BLK, and 6.8 SPC
  • No-laser, red, green, and infrared configurations

Pros

  • +Supplies the same trigger reset as BlackbeardX for less in the no-laser configuration
  • +Preserves the rifle's installed trigger, so reps happen on the real break and reset
  • +Twenty-second install with no permanent modification

Cons

  • No integrated Mantis sensor, so there is no motion or timing analysis
  • Not compatible with forced reset triggers, super safety systems, 22 LR, the Timney DH3, the Fostech Echo 2, or the PSA Custom Single Stage Drop-in
  • Compatibility is not guaranteed on TriggerTech triggers, Colt pinned-sear-block lowers, or 80 percent lowers
  • No Laser Academy access code included
