Maverick 88 Upgrades

The Maverick 88 costs under $300 and uses the same internal action as the Mossberg 500, the most-produced pump shotgun in U.S. history. The action, extractors, and trigger group are identical. What the factory gun lacks is everything bolted to the receiver: no light, a comb too low for an optic, a pinned forend that cannot accept replacement lights, five rounds of on-board capacity with no extension path, and no shell storage on the gun.

The Maverick 88 also differs from the Mossberg 500/590 in three ways that catch buyers off guard. The cross-bolt safety replaces the tang safety. The receiver is not drilled and tapped for optics. The barrel lug is permanently attached, which means magazine tube extensions that fit every Mossberg 500 and 590 do not fit the Maverick 88. Mag extensions do not fit: The single most common Maverick 88 upgrade mistake is ordering a Nordic Components MXT magazine tube extension. It does not fit. The Maverick 88 barrel lug is permanently attached to the magazine tube, unlike the Mossberg 500/590 where the barrel nut unscrews to expose a threaded extension point. There is no screw-on magazine extension for the Maverick 88.

The OPSol Mini-Clip 2.0 Flex ($18.79) is the capacity fix: A drop-in polymer adapter that sits in the loading port and lets the Maverick 88 cycle 1.75-inch Aguila mini shells. With mini shells, the factory 5+1 tube holds 9+1. The Mini-Clip drops in with no tools, is removable for standard 2.75-inch or 3-inch shell use, and costs under $20. Mini shells produce noticeably less recoil than full-length shells, which helps rapid follow-up shots. XS Big Dot Tritium front sight (~$65): The factory Maverick 88 ships with a plain brass bead that is slow to acquire and invisible in low light. The XS Big Dot tritium front sight replaces the bead with a large, high-visibility orange dot backed by a tritium insert that glows green in total darkness for 10+ years. The Maverick 88 uses a plain-barrel bead (not a pedestal bead like some Remingtons); confirm your bead type and order the matching XS SKU from XS Sights. Installation is an epoxy-over-bead swap on the plain-barrel version, no gunsmithing required.

Magpul MS1 Sling ($36.75): The Maverick 88 has standard Mossberg sling attachment points (QD stud in the stock, magazine cap stud on the front). The Magpul MS1 is a two-point quick-adjust sling with an MS1 slider for rapid length changes, no slipping once set, and no tails or snag hazards. It fits the factory studs without adapters. A sling lets you transition to a pistol without setting the shotgun down, which matters in any multi-gun or defensive scenario.

Budget build (~$808): Stock, mini-shell adapter, forend light with tube swap, velcro shell card, optic via saddle mount, and XS Big Dot. A fully capable defensive Maverick 88 for just over $1,000 total. Full-send build (~$1,285): Mesa Urbino stock, SureFire light with tube swap, rigid sidesaddle, drill/tap receiver for CROM, 507COMP optic, and tritium front sight. Maverick Arms is a subsidiary of O.F. Mossberg & Sons, and the Maverick 88 is the budget version of the Mossberg 500. The internal action, trigger group, extractors, and action bars are identical to the 500. Three manufacturing changes make it cheaper: a cross-bolt safety at the trigger guard (the 500 uses an ambidextrous tang safety), a pinned forend assembly (the 500 uses a threaded nut), and a barrel lug permanently attached to the magazine tube (the 500 barrel unscrews for cleaning and magazine extension installation). The receiver material is the same; the difference is that Mossberg does not drill and tap the Maverick 88 receiver for optics.

The result is a $220-$290 shotgun with 95% of the 500's functionality and most of its accessory ecosystem. Stocks, sidesaddles, slings, sights, and the OPSol Mini-Clip all fit directly. Forend replacements need a $25 action slide tube swap. Magazine tube extensions do not fit at all; the mini-shell adapter is the only capacity upgrade path. The receiver can be drilled and tapped by a gunsmith for optic mounts, which unlocks the full Aridus CROM and Holosun 507COMP setup. Why ammo comes before accessories: The Maverick 88 is an affordable gun that rewards practice ammo over parts. Pattern testing 00 buckshot through your specific barrel at 7, 10, and 15 yards will reveal more about your shotgun than any aftermarket part. Plan 50-100 rounds of your defensive load and 200-500 rounds of low-recoil practice ammunition before bolting anything to it.
