The Springfield Echelon does not have one footprint and it does not use plates. Its Variable Interface System is a single slide cut that takes several footprints directly, using patent-pending self-locking pins you configure for the optic you are mounting. Springfield's own claim is that VIS mounts over 30 optics directly to the slide without adapter plates, and as the mounting screws come up to torque the pins press outward against the optic's interior mounting surface to take out left and right movement. Trijicon RMR and SRO, Holosun 407C, 507C and 508T, the Holosun EPS Carry, the Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, and Shield RMSc pattern dots all sit on the slide itself, which puts the dot lower than any plate system manages.
Pin configuration is the part people get wrong. VIS is not a fit-anything pocket. You move the self-locking pins into the positions for your optic's footprint and use the screws specified for it, and pins left in the wrong holes are why an optic will not sit flat or will not torque down square. Spotting the cut is easy, since the VIS pocket sits under a polymer slide cover plate, and the Alpha runs the same system as the rest of the line rather than a budget version of it.

Yes. The Alpha 4.0C carries the same Variable Interface System under its polymer slide cover plate, so optic fitment does not change between the Alpha and the rest of the Echelon line.
They index the optic and take out lateral play. As the mounting screws are torqued to spec, the pins push outward on the optic's interior mounting surface, so the optic is located by steel rather than by screw clamp alone. That is the load path a plate system gives up.
