FN
FN's modern factory defensive load, a 30gr jacketed hollow point that meets the FBI test protocol. The first 5.7 carry round from the cartridge's originator engineered specifically for terminal performance.
FN DFNS SS200 is the defensive load FN built for its own cartridge. For years the best 5.7 carry ammo came from Speer; FN answered with a purpose-designed 30gr jacketed hollow point that the company states meets the FBI test protocol and was independently tested. For shooters who want carry ammo from the platform's originator, it is now the default alongside Speer Gold Dot.
The 30gr JHP runs faster and lighter than the 40gr defensive loads: 1,894 fps and 239 ft-lbs from a Five-seveN pistol, climbing to 2,240 fps and 334 ft-lbs from a PS90 carbine. The lighter bullet trades a little momentum for velocity and a flatter trajectory, and the hollow point is engineered to open at 5.7 velocities rather than rely on the caliber's speed alone. Where Speer's 40gr Gold Dot leans on bonded weight retention, DFNS leans on velocity and expansion geometry; both are credible, and the choice comes down to what feeds and groups in your pistol.
As with every 5.7 defensive load you pay premium pricing, roughly $0.81 per round. Function-test a box or two, confirm it cycles and groups, then carry it and train on the cheaper GUNR or Fiocchi range loads.
Add the FN DFNS SS200 5.7x28mm 30gr JHP to your build and see how it enhances your platform.
