Ed Brown
The original beavertail grip safety upgrade for the 1911, with memory grooves that index your hand consistently
The Ed Brown Memory Groove beavertail is the original aftermarket beavertail upgrade for the 1911 and remains the gunsmith standard. It solves two GI 1911 problems at once: the original short tang causes hammer bite on shooters with meaty hands, and the flat grip safety pad doesn't reliably depress under fast presentations or unusual grip angles. The Memory Groove pattern is a raised, textured pad on the rear of the safety that gives your hand a positive tactile index, ensuring the safety depresses fully every shot.
Available in Series 70 (firing-pin block omitted, found on most modern 1911s) and Series 80 (Colt firing-pin block) configurations, in blued or stainless finish. This is NOT a drop-in part. The frame must be cut for a beavertail tang and the safety must be hand-fit by a gunsmith, typically a $100-200 service. If your 1911 is already cut for a beavertail (most modern 1911s are), the Ed Brown drops in with minor stoning. If your frame is GI-spec (Springfield Mil-Spec, older Colts), you need a frame cut first.
