Colt
The original .45 ACP. John Browning's 1911 design in Colt production, 5" barrel, all-steel, 8+1
0-10 Scale Across 8 Axes
John Browning submitted the design that would become the 1911 to the US Army in 1907. After a series of competitive trials including a grueling 6,000-round endurance test in 1910 that the Browning design completed without a single malfunction, it was formally adopted on March 29, 1911 as the Model 1911 Pistol, Caliber .45, Automatic. It served as the US military's standard sidearm through 1985, a 74-year service tenure unmatched by any other handgun design. Colt manufactured the original production guns under that contract and continues to produce the Government Model today, making it the most direct lineage from Browning's original specification.
The Colt Government Model is faithful to the original geometry: 5-inch barrel, all-steel construction, single-action trigger with grip safety and thumb safety, and the tilting barrel Browning short-recoil action that every subsequent 1911-pattern pistol replicates. The current production Government includes Colt's Series 80 fire control group, which adds a firing pin block safety triggered by the trigger itself. Colt's quality control issues from the early 2000s have been resolved, and current production Government Models are reliable shooters that provide an excellent base for a custom build or a solid shooter as delivered. The 5-inch barrel produces the longest sight radius in the 1911 lineup, which is a meaningful accuracy advantage at range.
The practical case for the Colt Government Model is twofold. First, the single-action trigger in a well-fitted 1911 is the reference point against which all other defensive pistol triggers are judged: clean break, minimal overtravel, short reset, and no pre-travel. Competitive shooters who prioritize trigger feel above all other factors often start here. Second, the 1911 aftermarket is the deepest of any handgun platform, spanning triggers, grips, sights, barrels, bushings, thumb safeties, grip safeties, and complete custom builds. The Colt Government provides mil-spec dimensions for full aftermarket compatibility, making it the best base for a shooter who intends to build a custom 1911 over time.
