Overview

The Springfield Mil-Spec represents the best argument for spending $849 instead of $999 on a government-format 1911. At mil-spec dimensions, every standard 1911 aftermarket part fits without hand-fitting: Chip McCormick triggers, Wilson Combat grip safeties, Novak sight cuts, Pachmayr grips, EGW grip safety with memory groove, and every other part designed to government-spec tolerances drops in or requires only minor fitting. For a shooter who intends to build a custom 1911 over time, starting with the least expensive mil-spec-dimensional base makes financial sense.

The Parkerized matte finish is durable and non-reflective, which was the original mil-spec surface treatment before stainless steel 1911s became common. It requires oil maintenance to prevent surface rust, but provides better durability than blued steel finishes and avoids the holster wear that shows more visibly on Parkerized than stainless. The factory GI-style low-profile sights are the most commonly cited first upgrade target: most shooters replace them with Novak-cut sights or a dovetail-mounted front within the first few range sessions.

The 7+1 capacity uses the traditional GI-spec single-column magazine. Springfield ships the Mil-Spec with one GI magazine, but aftermarket 8-round magazines from Wilson Combat, Chip McCormick, and Tripp Research are direct drop-in replacements that add a round without modification. The mil-spec tolerances mean the pistol ships with a trigger pull heavier than a custom 1911, typically 5.5 to 6.5 pounds, but the underlying geometry responds well to basic trigger work that most gunsmiths can perform for under $100. Springfield's production quality has been consistent, and the Mil-Spec is a reliable shooter as delivered before any upgrades.
