Saraid Top Notch AR-15 Charging Handle

The Saraid Top Notch takes the opposite approach to every other charging handle upgrade on the market. Instead of making the side latches bigger, ambidextrous, or better textured, it deletes them and puts a single vertical grip on the top of the handle, standing up on the rifle's centerline. Haga Defense markets it as the first vertical charging handle for the AR-15, and it is patent pending. The practical claim is snag reduction: a standard extended or ambidextrous latch is a hard protrusion sticking out over the ejection port or the left side of the receiver, which is what catches on plate carrier cummerbunds, sling hardware, and pouch flaps. A centerline grip has nothing hanging off either side to catch.

Construction is a single piece of 7075-T6 billet aluminum in a Type III hard anodized finish, weighing 1.1 oz. That undercuts the Radian Raptor at 1.3 oz and the Geissele ACH at 1.42 oz, largely because there are no latches, springs, or roll pins in the design. Retention is handled by an internal spring-ball detent rather than a latch engaging the receiver, which Saraid notes keeps external pressure and wear off the upper receiver. The handle body also carries an undercut behind the grip to reduce contact with sling retention bands on the stock.

The tradeoffs are real and worth understanding before buying. The manual of arms changes: you are pulling straight back on a vertical grip rather than sweeping a latch, so muscle memory built on a mil-spec or Raptor handle does not transfer. Saraid states the grip stays low enough to clear iron sights and the lowest-mounted red dots, but notes that certain LPVOs and magnified optics can end up in close proximity depending on the optic and mount height, so a tall-mounted magnified optic build needs a clearance check. At $150 it is the most expensive AR-15 charging handle in this catalog, above the Radian Raptor at $104.95 and the Geissele ACH at $109.79, and it is a patent-pending design that reached market in August 2026, so the spring-ball retention has no track record behind it the way a Raptor latch does. Buy it if charging-handle snag is a problem you actually have; a Raptor or ACH remains the safer pick for a duty gun.
