USB-C PD soldering iron running open-source IronOS, the standard tool for building and repairing quads.
A self-built quad is roughly thirty solder joints, and every one of them carries either flight-critical current or flight-critical signal. A bad iron makes cold joints, and cold joints fail under vibration in the air rather than on the bench. The Pinecil is the tool that ended the "borrow dad's 25 W pencil" era of FPV building: it hits working temperature in 12 seconds, holds it under load, and boosts on demand when a fat ground pad tries to sink all the heat away.
Power comes over USB-C supporting both PD and QC 3.0, or through a DC5525 barrel jack if you already own a bench supply. The supply is not included, and this is the detail to get right: a phone charger will run the iron badly. Use a 60 W or larger USB-C PD brick and the difference on ESC pads is immediate.
Firmware is Ralim's open-source IronOS, which gives a real settings menu rather than a dial: tip temperature adjustable from 100 to 400 degrees C, configurable sleep and shutdown timers, and boost temperature on a button. Auto standby drops the tip when you set the iron down, which saves both tips and workbenches. The body is a SAE 304 stainless steel core inside a polycarbonate shell, 60 g in the box, small enough to live in a field repair kit alongside a spare prop and a hex driver.
Add three things to the order and the build goes smoothly: 60/40 leaded solder in 0.8 mm (leaded flows better and beginners should not fight lead-free on a first build), liquid flux, and a set of helping hands. Tin every wire and every pad separately, then join them. That single habit produces most of the difference between a build that flies and one that browns out in a hard turn.
