Buy the radio first and buy it once. It outlives every quad you own, it binds to everything you build, and it is the piece of the hobby where cheap hardware translates directly into crashes. The Pocket runs EdgeTX, the open-source firmware that every FPV tutorial assumes, on X5 hall-effect gimbals with quad ball bearings. Hall sensors read stick position magnetically rather than through a wiper on a resistive track, which is why they hold center after thousands of flights instead of developing the jitter that ends a potentiometer gimbal's life.
The radio side is internal ExpressLRS on 2.4 GHz, rated to 250 mW, which is the current standard link and the one every modern receiver speaks. Up to 16 channels are available depending on what receiver you bind, which is far more than a freestyle quad needs; four for the sticks and four or five switches covers arm, flight mode, beeper, VTX power, and turtle mode. An external nano module bay sits on the back for a TBS Nano Crossfire or Nano Tracer if you later want 900 MHz for long range.
Power is two 18650 cells you supply yourself, charged in the radio over USB-C with QC3 support. That is a deliberate design choice rather than a cost cut: 18650s are cheap, replaceable, and airline-legal to carry when removed. The whole radio is 288 g and folds its antenna flat to 156.6 x 65.1 x 125.3 mm, small enough that it lives in a backpack instead of a case.
Before it ever binds to a quad, plug it into a computer over USB and fly a simulator. The Pocket enumerates as a USB game controller, so Liftoff, Uncrashed, and the free DRL sim all read your actual sticks. Ten hours in a simulator is the cheapest crash insurance in this hobby.
