Forward Controls Design
17-4 stainless AR-15 pins extended on the left side so the extra grip never fouls an ambidextrous safety.
The Forward Controls Design PF-040 takes a different approach to the extended-pin problem. Most extended pins grow the head on the right side of the receiver, which is exactly where an ambidextrous safety lever sits, so the two controls fight each other. FCD instead extends the pins 0.040 inch on the LEFT side. The extra length gives more leverage to start the pin and, because the pin pushes farther through, leaves more grasping area exposed on the right for the pull, all without any head intruding into the ambi-safety's arc.
The pins are machined from 17-4 PH stainless bar stock and QPQ finished for hardness and corrosion resistance. They hold true TDP diameter tolerance, 0.2485 inch plus zero minus 0.005, so fit is mil-spec rather than oversized. A groove feature lets you push the detent in by hand and then rotate the pin to capture it in its track, which simplifies install without any tools.
Choose the PF-040 when you run an ambidextrous safety and want extended-pin convenience without the right-side head collision, or when you simply want a precisely toleranced stainless set from a maker known for tight tolerances. Note the left-side extension may not clear PDW-style stocks whose support bars overlap the takedown pin.
