The Marlin 1895 Trapper Magpul ELG (Model 70912) is the rifle that finally answers the question of what a tactical .45-70 lever gun should look like in current production. Ruger took over Marlin in 2020, restarted the Mayodan, North Carolina line, and the Trapper variant pairs the short 1895 action with a Magpul polymer stock system that does things walnut levers physically cannot. The 16.17-inch cold hammer-forged 410 stainless barrel ships with an 11/16x24 thread protector, the forend carries M-LOK accessory slots, and the receiver is 416 stainless with a factory Picatinny base on top. Sights are Skinner front blade and adjustable peep rear, ready to use out of the box.
The Magpul ELG stock is the differentiator. Length of pull adjusts from 12.38 to 13.88 inches in three half-inch spacers, the comb takes a cheek riser with its own spacer stack, and the buttstock carries a six-round ammo quiver for fast reloads. The big-loop lever clears winter gloves. At 7.25 pounds bare with a 33.25-inch overall length, the Trapper handles like a fighting carbine in a cartridge that still throws 405-grain bullets at 1,300+ feet per second. For dangerous-game backup, brush hunting, and any jurisdiction where lever actions retain a regulatory exemption that semi-autos do not, this is the configuration to buy.
