Overview

Most ways to shorten the back of an AR pistol cost real money and take something away. Maxim's SCW and CQB systems buy their compactness with a proprietary buffer and carrier, and they price accordingly. The KAK Mini Shockwave kit takes a different route: a shortened five-position receiver extension and matched mini buffer that still cycle a standard mil-spec bolt carrier group, sold as a complete kit with the blade, spring, end plate and castle nut.

KAK states the tube extends only 5.25 inches from the rear of the receiver and collapses completely flush, and that the Shockwave brace itself "is taken down from just over 6 inches to below 4.75 inches" — the mini blade is a physically shortened Shockwave blade, which is why KAK warns the cut sections can carry finish blemishes. The tube is hard coat anodized 7075 impact extrusion and ships with a flatwire spring; the buffer comes in a 2.2 ounce carbine weight or a 3.05 ounce heavy weight, which is the tuning lever for a short-barreled or suppressed host. KAK lists the rifle-caliber kit as compatible with 5.56/223, 7.62x39 and 300 Blackout, and sells a separate pistol-caliber version for blowback PCC builds.

The catch is the same one that comes with any non-standard extension: the tube, buffer and spring are a system, so a later stock swap means going back to a mil-spec extension. KAK also warns that the shortened sections can show cosmetic blemishes from the cutting process. For a truck gun, a bag gun, or any AR pistol where overall length is the binding constraint and keeping a normal BCG matters, this is the cheapest credible way to buy back four inches.

Key Features

  • Kit includes the shortened Shockwave brace, mini five-position tube, buffer, flatwire spring, mil-spec end plate and castle nut
  • Tube extends only 5.25 in from the rear of the receiver and collapses flush
  • Runs a standard mil-spec BCG rather than a proprietary carrier
  • Choice of 2.2 oz carbine or 3.05 oz heavy mini buffer
  • Hard coat anodized 7075 impact extrusion tube
  • Listed for 5.56/223, 7.62x39 and 300 Blackout hosts

Pros

  • +A fraction of a Maxim SCW for a similar compactness goal
  • +Keeps a mil-spec bolt carrier group instead of a proprietary one
  • +Takes braced length behind the receiver from over 6 in to under 4.75 in
  • +Two buffer weights cover short-barrel and suppressed tuning
  • +Ships complete, including spring and castle nut

Cons

  • Proprietary tube, buffer and spring work as a set, so a later stock swap means a new extension
  • KAK warns shortened sections can show cosmetic blemishes
  • Rifle-caliber and pistol-caliber versions are different SKUs, easy to order wrong
  • Five positions across a very short tube means small length-of-pull steps
