Baofeng
VHF/UHF dual band handheld radio with 128 channels and 5W output. Receives NOAA weather and transmits on GMRS/amateur frequencies.
The Baofeng UV-5R provides two-way communication capability at a price point that makes it practical to buy multiples for family and group coordination. While the Midland ER310 receives emergency broadcasts, the UV-5R adds the ability to transmit, enabling you to communicate with others when cell networks are down. In regional disasters, this two-way capability can be the difference between isolation and coordination.
The UV-5R covers both VHF (136-174 MHz) and UHF (400-520 MHz) bands, providing access to GMRS frequencies (family radio), amateur radio repeaters, NOAA weather channels, and public safety monitoring. Programming 128 channels is done via free CHIRP software and a programming cable. Pre-program your local repeaters, GMRS channels, and NOAA frequencies before an emergency occurs. The 5W transmit power provides approximately 1-5 miles of range depending on terrain, more with a better antenna or repeater access.
Important legal context: transmitting on amateur (ham) radio frequencies requires an FCC Technician license. The test is 35 multiple-choice questions, costs around $15, and is valid for 10 years. Transmitting on GMRS frequencies requires a separate GMRS license ($35, no test, covers your entire family). In genuine life-threatening emergencies, FCC regulations permit unlicensed transmission on any frequency. Buy the radios now, get licensed, learn to use them, and program them before you need them. A radio you cannot operate under stress is dead weight.
