Best 10mm Ammo 2026: Bear, Hunting, Defense & Range

Best 10mm ammo ranked for 2026 by use case: bear defense (hard cast), hunting (XTP and monolithic), self-defense (HST, Gold Dot, FlexLock), and range (Blazer Brass, AE, S&B). Includes the 10mm vs 10mm Lite test, full-power velocity standards, and Federal HST vs Speer Gold Dot comparison.

Best 10mm Ammo 2026: Bear, Hunting, Defense & Range

The best 10mm ammo for 2026 is Federal HST 200gr for defense (1,130 fps, 567 ft-lbs), Buffalo Bore 220gr Outdoorsman for bear and woods carry (1,200 fps, 703 ft-lbs), Hornady XTP 180gr for medium-game hunting (1,275 fps), and CCI Blazer Brass 180gr for full-power range training (1,200 fps). Before any of those, run the 10mm vs 10mm Lite test below: half the loads sold as "10mm" today are downloaded FBI-Lite spec at 1,030 fps. Read the velocity on the box.

Is Your 10mm Ammo Actually 10mm? Run This Test First

Half the loads sold as "10mm" today are not full-power 10mm. The original Norma 10mm spec pushes a 180gr bullet to roughly 1,300 fps. In 1990 the FBI downloaded that to ~950-1,030 fps because full-power 10mm was punishing agents during qualification. That downloaded spec became "FBI Lite" or "10mm Lite," and several major brands still ship it without labeling it. If you buy a box of 10mm expecting bear medicine and walk away with a hot .40 S&W equivalent, that's the failure mode.

The test is simple: read the velocity printed on the box and compare it to the table below. For a 180gr bullet, anything at or under 1,050 fps is FBI Lite. 1,050-1,180 fps is mid-pressure (between Lite and full-power). 1,180 fps and above is true full-power 10mm. For a 200gr bullet, full-power lands at 1,100 fps and up. For 220gr, full-power is 1,150 fps and up.

The takeaway: American Eagle is not a bad round, but it is also not what most buyers think they're getting. If you carry a full-power defensive 10mm and train exclusively on AE10A, your recoil management at the moment of truth will be calibrated to the wrong impulse. Match your range load to the pressure tier of your carry load. CCI Blazer Brass at 1,200 fps is the only commodity-priced load that matches full-power defensive recoil. If you're still picking a platform, cross-reference our best 10mm pistols guide for the Glock 20, Glock 40, S&W M&P 10mm, and Dan Wesson Razorback ranked for hunting, bear defense, and CCW.

Best 10mm Ammo for Bear & Woods Defense

The best 10mm load for bear country is a 200-220gr hard cast flat nose at full pressure. Hard cast lead alloy with a wide meplat drives straight through heavy bone without deflecting or expanding, which is exactly the opposite of what a defensive JHP is designed to do. The 220gr Buffalo Bore Outdoorsman is the heaviest factory 10mm bullet sold and the benchmark for grizzly country. Underwood and DoubleTap cover the same use case at lower price points with documented manufacturer chronograph data.

Best 10mm Ammo for Hunting

For medium game at handgun ranges, the Hornady XTP 180gr is the proven civilian 10mm hunting standard at 1,275 fps and 650 ft-lbs. It is a controlled-expansion JHP that opens reliably on whitetail-class animals while penetrating deeply enough to reach vitals on a quartering shot. For shooters who want hard-cast penetration without lead, the Underwood Xtreme Penetrator 140gr is a solid copper monolithic at 1,500 fps, the highest-velocity production 10mm offered. Match the bullet to the animal: XTP for thin-skinned medium game, Xtreme Penetrator for tougher hogs and longer shots where deep penetration matters more than wound channel diameter.

Best 10mm Ammo for Self-Defense

The best defensive 10mm is the Federal HST 200gr at standard-pressure 1,130 fps. Same proven HST design that LE agencies adopted for 9mm and .45 ACP, with skived hollow points that resist clogging through clothing and near-100% weight retention through FBI-protocol barriers. Speer Gold Dot 200gr is the bonded-core alternative for vehicle or through-barrier scenarios where the Uni-Cor jacket-to-core bond outperforms HST's wider bare-gel expansion. Hornady Critical Duty 175gr FlexLock is the barrier-blind duty pick from the same family the FBI selected in 9mm. All three are standard-pressure loads, intentionally tuned for indoor defensive penetration depth rather than full-power hunting velocity. For the 9mm equivalent of this framing, see our best 9mm self-defense ammo guide; the FBI-protocol methodology is identical.

Best 10mm Range & Training Ammo

Pick range ammo to match the recoil impulse of the defensive load you actually carry. CCI Blazer Brass 5221 at 1,200 fps is the only commodity-priced load that runs at full Norma spec, which is what makes it the right answer for shooters training with Federal HST 200gr or any full-power load. American Eagle AE10A at 1,030 fps is genuine FBI Lite, appropriate for new shooter familiarization but not for training a defensive-recoil response. Sellier & Bellot SB10A at 1,164 fps splits the difference and is often the cheapest 10mm at retail. For the same range-load cost-per-round logic applied to 9mm, see our best 9mm range ammo guide.

Federal HST vs Speer Gold Dot in 10mm

Federal HST 200gr wins on velocity and bare-gel expansion; Speer Gold Dot 200gr wins on bonded-core integrity through intermediate barriers. Both are top-tier defensive 10mm. The pick depends on which failure mode matters more in your scenario.

Verdict:For concealed carry against two-legged threats in soft-tissue scenarios, HST is the marginal winner on wound channel diameter. For shooters expecting vehicle-barrier or through-cover defensive scenarios (rural duty, vehicle-based threats), Gold Dot's bonded construction is the more consistent pick. The same logic applies in 9mm and .45 ACP, where Gold Dot has decades of LE adoption specifically for barrier performance.

What 10mm Ammo for a Glock 20

The Glock 20 is the platform most 10mm buyers are feeding. Stock it with four loads for four different uses. The Glock 20's SF-130 dual recoil spring system handles all full-power 10mm loadings without modification, and the factory barrel is fine for jacketed and Hi-Tek coated bullets. If you're shooting frequent uncoated hard cast, an aftermarket fully-supported barrel from KKM or Lone Wolf is the standard upgrade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who makes the best 10mm ammo?
Federal Premium HST 200gr (P10HST1S) is the best overall defensive 10mm at 1,130 fps and 567 ft-lbs from a 5-inch barrel. For bear or woods carry, Buffalo Bore 220gr Outdoorsman (21C/20) is the heaviest factory load available at 1,200 fps with documented 36+ inch straight-line penetration. For hunting, Hornady XTP 180gr (9126) is the classic JHP at 1,275 fps. For range, CCI Blazer Brass 180gr (5221) at 1,200 fps is the only commodity load that runs at true full-power 10mm pressure.
Can a 10mm penetrate a grizzly skull?
With a full-power hard cast load, yes. Buffalo Bore 220gr Outdoorsman at 1,200 fps generates 703 ft-lbs of muzzle energy and is documented to penetrate over 36 inches of living tissue in a straight line; it will penetrate a grizzly skull at close range. Underwood 200gr Hard Cast at 1,250 fps and DoubleTap Hardcast Solid 200gr will perform similarly. JHP defensive loads like Federal HST or Speer Gold Dot are NOT appropriate bear-defense ammunition; they're designed to expand and stop in soft tissue rather than drive deep through bone. If you're carrying 10mm in bear country, the load matters more than the caliber.
What is the hottest 10mm round?
By advertised muzzle velocity, the hottest factory 10mm rounds are Underwood Xtreme Penetrator 140gr at 1,500 fps and DoubleTap Hardcast Solid 200gr at a catalog-listed 1,300 fps (real-world Glock 20 chronograph closer to 1,105 fps, per DoubleTap's own published data). For weight-class comparisons, Buffalo Bore 220gr Outdoorsman at 1,200 fps and Underwood 200gr Hard Cast at 1,250 fps are the heaviest full-power offerings. The hottest pick depends on whether you measure by velocity (Underwood XP wins) or momentum (Buffalo Bore 220gr wins).
What grain is best for 10mm?
It depends on the use case. 200gr is the standard heavy defensive weight (Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot) and a common hunting/woods weight (Underwood, DoubleTap hard cast). 220gr is the heaviest factory option (Buffalo Bore Outdoorsman) for maximum penetration. 175-180gr is the range/training standard (Blazer Brass, American Eagle, Sellier & Bellot) and a duty defensive option (Hornady Critical Duty 175gr FlexLock). 140-155gr is the high-velocity light end for monolithic copper loads (Underwood Xtreme Penetrator) where velocity-driven hydraulic effect matters more than bullet mass.
What is the difference between 10mm and 10mm Lite?
10mm Lite (also called FBI Lite) is a reduced-velocity 10mm loading developed by the FBI in 1990 after they found full-power 10mm too punishing for some agents. The original Norma 10mm spec pushes a 180gr bullet to roughly 1,300 fps; FBI Lite drops that to ~950-1,030 fps. Federal American Eagle (AE10A, 1,030 fps) is a textbook FBI Lite loading despite not being marketed as one. Sellier & Bellot (SB10A, 1,164 fps) sits between Lite and full-power. CCI Blazer Brass (5221, 1,200 fps) and the boutique defensive/hunting loads run at true full-power 10mm. Buyers expecting bear-stopping power need to read the velocity on the box, not assume the brand name.
Is Federal HST or Speer Gold Dot better in 10mm?
Federal HST 200gr (1,130 fps, 567 ft-lbs) edges Speer Gold Dot 200gr (1,100 fps, 537 ft-lbs) on velocity and produces wider expansion in bare gel. Gold Dot's advantage is the Uni-Cor electrochemically bonded jacket and core, which holds together through auto glass, sheet steel, and other intermediate barriers better than the unbonded HST. For concealed carry against two-legged threats in soft-tissue scenarios, HST is the marginal winner. For shooters who expect vehicle-barrier or through-cover defensive scenarios, Gold Dot's bonded construction is the more consistent pick. Both are top-tier defensive 10mm loads.
Is 10mm good for self-defense?
Yes, with a standard-pressure defensive load like Federal HST 200gr (P10HST1S) or Speer Gold Dot 200gr (54000GD). Both deliver FBI-protocol-window penetration (14-17 inches) with reliable expansion through clothing. Avoid full-power 180gr hard cast or hunting loads for indoor defensive use; they overpenetrate by 20+ inches and risk hitting bystanders through walls. The main downside of 10mm for self-defense is the 15+1 capacity limit (Glock 20) versus 17-21 rounds in a comparable 9mm pistol. If you can carry a 10mm full-size and run the recoil, the terminal performance is excellent.
What 10mm ammo should I shoot in my Glock 20?
Range training: CCI Blazer Brass 180gr FMJ (5221) at 1,200 fps matches the recoil of full-power defensive loads. Defense: Federal HST 200gr (P10HST1S) at 1,130 fps is the standard. Bear/woods: Buffalo Bore 220gr Outdoorsman (21C/20) at 1,200 fps is the benchmark. Hunting: Hornady XTP 180gr (9126) for medium game, Underwood Xtreme Penetrator 140gr for monolithic-copper performance. The Glock 20's SF-130 dual recoil spring system handles all full-power 10mm loadings; the factory barrel is fine for jacketed and coated bullets, but if you're shooting uncoated hard cast frequently, an aftermarket fully-supported barrel (KKM, Lone Wolf) is the standard upgrade.
