Make that trade when a case, a safe, or a vehicle mount has a hard dimension, and not for the look.

Configuration comes first, because MP5 model names are a trap. One family can span a full-size gun, a 5.8-inch intermediate compact, and a shorter K form, and the shared name tells you nothing about barrel length, overall length, rail, or box contents. This guide ranks the specific configurations on the cards above. A rail that ships on a Standard package does not earn the Core package a spot.

Optic mounting comes next, because it is the first money you spend after the gun. The PTR 9CT has a 4.5-inch steel top rail on the receiver. The ZF-5 Premium Package includes a detachable rail. The AP5 Core, AP5-P Core, MAC 5, and MAC 5K ship without one. Adding a rail later means buying a mount, matching it to the host, and confirming the two agree, which is a purchase and a fitment problem rather than a five-minute job.

Package contents break the ties, weighted by what you would have bought anyway. Three magazines and the rail are the ZF-5's lead; its sling, case, cleaning kit, flash hider, manual, and lock are pleasant rather than decisive. PTR sends two steel magazines, a case, a rear-sight tool, a cable lock, and a single-point sling. Both MAC packages include two magazines, a case, cleaning kit, sling, flash hider, and manual. Buy full-size unless a specific dimension is forcing your hand. The ZF-5, AP5 Core, and MAC 5 all run 8.9-inch barrels, and the PTR 9CT sits in the same class at 8.87 inches. You get the full handguard to hold, the longer sight radius, and the profile that made the pattern famous in the first place.

Go compact when 13.7 inches overall is the number that decides the purchase. Both compacts here use 5.8-inch barrels. The AP5-P is the MKE-built version at $1,499.99. The MAC 5K is the alternative at $1,329, with two magazines in the box and the same paddle-plus-button magazine release pair as the full-size MAC 5.

One warning about the letter K, which gets applied loosely. A 5.8-inch intermediate compact is not a 4.6-inch flush-muzzle K gun. More than an inch of barrel separates them, and it reshapes the front end: handguard, mount, and end-cap options can all differ. Shop the barrel length and the host, not the last letter of the model name.

Buy the PTR 9CT when the optic and the accessories should already be handled. Its 4.5-inch steel Picatinny top rail is a factory mounting surface, and the aluminum M-LOK handguard takes lights and hand stops directly. The bill comes due in looks and material: steel over the receiver and aluminum around the barrel instead of the smooth classic profile.

The ZF-5 Premium Package splits the difference and that is why it takes the top rank. The detachable Picatinny rail is in the box, so the optic path is settled, and the classic polymer handguard stays. What it gives up to PTR is a joint: a detachable mount is one more interface than a factory top rail has.

On the AP5 Core, AP5-P Core, MAC 5, and MAC 5K, the rail is a decision you make after the gun. That is the right order when the classic profile is the whole point, and it puts fitment on you. Count the box contents you would have bought anyway, and discount the rest. The ZF-5 Premium Package leads on three magazines and the detachable rail. The sling, case, cleaning kit, flash hider, manual, and lock round it out, but they are not what moves it to the top of the list.

PTR spends its package budget differently. Two steel magazines plus the factory rail and M-LOK forend do more for a modern build than a third magazine does, and the case, sight tool, cable lock, and single-point sling fill in the rest. Choose PTR over Zenith when the top rail and M-LOK matter more to you than the extra magazine and the classic handguard.

The MAC 5 and MAC 5K each include two magazines, a case, cleaning kit, sling, flash hider, and manual, and both leave the rail out. The AP5 Core gives you one magazine and a sling. The AP5-P Core adds a hard case and lock to that same one-magazine package, without an optic mount or cleaning kit. The MP5 pattern is roller-delayed blowback. On firing, the rollers resist the bolt head's first rearward movement and stretch out the opening sequence, and they never lock the breech. “Roller-locked” gets used casually for the same guns, but it names a different mechanism, so it is worth keeping straight when you read spec sheets.

Every gun here shares that action, which is also the reason none of them wins on reliability in this ranking. Brand loyalty in this niche runs hot and none of it is a test. The differences you can actually check are the ones above: barrel and overall length, optic mounting, muzzle threads, controls, and box contents.

All eight guns share one manual-of-arms quirk: no last-round bolt hold-open. The bolt rides forward on an empty magazine, so you reload by count or by feel. The MAC guns at least give you two ways to drop a magazine, the paddle behind the magazine well and the button, but nothing on this pattern locks back for you.

All eight guns give you both 1/2x28 threads and a 3-lug interface, which is a strong starting position for a suppressor and not a fit guarantee. The mount still has to match the muzzle device and the can you plan to run.

The HK pair shows why the geometry deserves a second look. The SP5 keeps an integral 3-lug engagement surface behind its threaded muzzle. The SP5K-PDW reaches the 3-lug path through a factory threaded adapter, which has to come off before the bare 1/2x28 threads are usable. The SP5K-PDW is the compact one. Its 5.83-inch barrel and 13.8-inch overall length put it in the same size class as the AP5-P and MAC 5K, and it comes with the same two magazines, sling, and sight-adjustment tool at $3,679. Neither ships with an optic rail and neither has a bolt hold-open, so what the money buys is the rollmark and the factory behind it. Make the part maker name your gun. The AP5-P and MAC 5K are the clean illustration: identical 5.8-inch barrels, identical 13.7-inch overall length, and none of that proves a rail, handguard, or end assembly crosses between them. Apply the same caution moving from a clone to an HK original.
