Choose the Operating System Before the Accessories

That 14.7 ounces is not a spec to skim past. It is half of the reciprocating-mass equation that the buffer completes, which is why a bolt swap and a buffer swap are one decision rather than two.

CMMG radial delay is a system, not a part. The CMMG Fixed Ejector Retrofit Kit at $424.95 converts a compatible CMMG 9mm radial-delayed upper to the current fixed-ejector architecture while reusing the existing handguard, barrel nut, and barrel. It is a retrofit kit for that ecosystem rather than a universal 9mm bolt carrier group, and CMMG excludes Mk9 lowers. Complete proprietary uppers, including bufferless designs, are their own systems again. Their internal parts and recoil paths stay matched to that maker's parts list, so treat them as a separate build path rather than a source of parts for a conventional AR-9. AR-9 Buffers and Buffer Weight

Start with the number your operating-system or adapter maker publishes, then tune around it. Buffer weight in an AR-9 is one term in a system that also includes bolt mass, receiver-extension depth, spring rate, bolt travel, barrel length, ammunition, and whether a suppressor is hanging off the muzzle. A chart that claims one weight for every 9mm AR is describing a gun that does not exist.

Two published figures anchor the range. Stern Defense specifies at least a 5.4-ounce buffer with a carbine spring for a simple-blowback build running its Glock magazine adapter. KynSHOT specifies the 6.0-ounce RB5015HD at $164.99 for simple-blowback 9mm hosts with barrels of eight inches or longer and for suppressed builds, where the extra bolt speed makes a lighter buffer feel sharp. The RB5015HD is 4.35 inches long in a 17-4 stainless body and drops into a standard seven-inch carbine receiver extension; an A5 or AR-10 extension needs the spacer weight KynSHOT specifies. A CMMG radial-delayed build follows CMMG's own recoil recipe rather than either of these numbers.

Hydraulic damping and mechanical delay shape the same stroke differently. The RB5015HD dissipates bolt energy through hydraulic resistance across the travel and damps the return to battery. The Maxim system concentrates its resistance at the beginning of bolt travel, then gives way to a lower-resistance stroke. On a build that is already violent, the damped buffer is the cheaper first move; on a build where the bolt geometry cooperates, the roller-delayed system changes the character of the gun rather than absorbing the symptom. A 9mm AR barrel has no gas port, no gas block, no gas tube, and no locking-lug barrel extension, because a blowback action never unlocks anything. What buffer weight should I use in an AR9?
There is no safe one-number answer. Start with the operating-system or adapter maker's specification, then consider bolt weight, receiver-extension depth, spring, barrel length, ammunition, and suppressor use. Stern Defense requires at least a 5.4-ounce buffer with a carbine spring for its simple-blowback MAG-AD9 setup. KynSHOT specifies the six-ounce RB5015HD for 9mm barrels of eight inches or longer and for suppressed hosts. A CMMG radial-delayed build follows CMMG's own recoil-system guidance instead.
Is a Glock-mag AR9 better than a Colt-mag AR9?
Neither is automatically better. Glock magazines are common and work with adapters such as the Stern Defense MAG-AD9 or dedicated lowers such as the Aero Precision EPC-9. Colt stick magazines give a traditional SMG layout and work with adapters such as the Macon Armory 9mm Colt Pattern Magazine Well Adapter.
