U.S. Military HK Clones: HK416, M27 IAR, M110A1 & MP5

The M27, M110A1, MP5 family, and two .45 pistols each have a civilian HK relative. The action, receiver, controls, and issued equipment decide how close that relative is. Compare the current models in the firearm catalog; the broader military clone guide covers other U.S. rifle programs.

The Mark 23 is the closest factory match because HK changed little beyond markings and barrel headspace. The piston rifles keep their operating systems, while current A4 rails and controls move them farther from a period clone. That difference matters more than a shared model family.

The 16.5-inch MR556 A4 at $3,749 is the factory starting point for an M27-length rifle. It uses a 5.56 short-stroke piston action from the HK416 family, while its civilian semi-automatic receiver and current M-LOK A4 rail put it in a different visual era from an issued M27. Buy it when HK manufacture and the piston system matter more than matching one deployment photograph.

The Marine M27 grew from the HK416 family and spread beyond the original automatic-rifle role. The M38 is an M27 variant equipped for the designated-marksman role with an optic and suppressor. Those visible packages also changed over time, so a clone has to pick an era. The civilian IAR guide explains the sustained-fire role; matching an M27's issued parts is a separate choice.

For a more period-looking M27-inspired project, Brownells sells a 16.5-inch BRN-4/M27 barrel at $349.99 and an 11-inch FDE quad rail at $156.83. The barrel length and bayonet-lug profile, followed by the tan four-sided Picatinny rail, change the two details a viewer notices first. These are Brownells reproductions. They do not turn an MR556 A4 into an issued M27, and they are not a complete upper.

The parts route requires a compatible receiver, the specified gas block, bolt and piston parts, a separate rail barrel nut, and the rest of the rifle. Brownells names BRN-4, HK416, and older MR556 fitment for these parts; it does not publish MR556 A4 fitment. Choose the factory MR556 A4 for a complete HK rifle, or the BRN-4 parts for a separately planned, fit-checked reproduction.

The stock-equipped MR556 A4 SBR at $4,299 is the closer factory choice for a short HK416 silhouette. Its 11-inch barrel and shorter rail change the proportions that the 16.5-inch M27-length MR556 A4 cannot match. It keeps HK's 5.56 short-stroke piston action and an adjustable gas regulator.

The SBR is still a semi-automatic A4 rifle with current controls and rail, rather than a copy of one issued short HK416 configuration. It is an NFA-regulated factory SBR. HK also sells a separate 11-inch MR556 A4 pistol, so check the model number before buying a stock-equipped rifle. Choose the longer MR556 A4 for an M27-length project.

Start an M110A1-family project with the factory HK MR762 A4. Both rifles sit in the HK417/G28 short-stroke piston family. The civilian rifle's 16.5-inch barrel is close to the Army SDMR's 16.3 inches, so the length and gas system line up more closely than the furniture does.

The Army rifle carries its own receiver configuration, furniture, optic, and service equipment; the M110A1 is not the original M110 SASS. The MR762 A4 gets the operating family and chambering right without reproducing that issued package. For a full-size MP5, choose the HK-made SP5. Its stamped receiver and roller-delayed 9mm action preserve the key mechanical and visual traits, with an 8.86-inch barrel and a three-lug muzzle surface. U.S. Army protective-services personnel trained with the MP5. The SP5 is a semi-automatic pistol, so it does not reproduce an issued stock or select-fire trigger pack.

The shorter SP5K-PDW answers the MP5K. It keeps the roller-delayed action in a compact 5.83-inch barrel format, with a factory threaded three-lug adapter. Its shorter front end and different rear furniture make it a separate K-family choice, not a cut-down SP5. A U.S. Army record shows MP5K use by a security detachment. The commercial Mark 23 is the closest factory match to the issued Mk23. HK's operator manual calls the two almost identical: the .45 ACP pistol keeps the long 5.87-inch threaded O-ring barrel and DA/SA controls. Commercial slide markings and barrel headspace differ, and the original laser and suppressor were separate service equipment. Buy the Mark 23 when the service pistol itself is the goal rather than a smaller pistol with similar features.

The HK45 Compact Tactical V1 follows another U.S. special-operations .45 family. HK documents a decock-only service variant. The standard retail V1 adds a safety/decocker, changing the lever's function and the control layout your thumb meets. Its 4.57-inch threaded barrel, raised sights, and compact frame make it the closest standard retail model here. HK lists a decock-only option by special order or factory conversion; ask HK whether that option is currently offered if matching the service controls is the priority.

Leave the MP7 and G36 out of a U.S.-issue HK clone plan. A Marine MP7 photo shows allied training, while a U.S.-German exercise identifies its G36 rifles as German-issued. The M320 was issued by the U.S. military; this guide does not map it to a civilian HK counterpart.
