Methodology

What the index measures

Qualifying in-stock training-ammunition offers are converted to price per round, deduplicated within each retailer, and summarized as the median of each retailer's median offer. Every caliber must have at least five accepted offers from at least two retailers. Advertised item prices exclude shipping and tax.

The published figure is labeled Median of retailer median advertised prices per round. It represents ordinary training and practice ammunition only; defensive, hunting, match, subsonic, remanufactured, and specialty loads do not enter the benchmark.

Every observation carries its month and sample size. A new monthly snapshot extends the series without rewriting earlier published values.

Pack counts are parsed from explicit title fields such as “50 rounds” or “case of 1,000.” Ambiguous packages, shipping, tax, rebates, member pricing, and cart-only discounts are not included.

Retailer feeds behind August 2026

The first edition uses the audited feed timestamps below. Future editions omit stale or unreadable feeds. A failed refresh may use an existing cache only when its own timestamp is still fresh, and publication still requires at least two fresh retailer feeds to pass every caliber coverage gate.
