Competition Pistol

Built to win stages, not look pretty

Glock 17 Gen5 MOS4 componentsCurrent build cost: $1,547.48Prices as of Jul 1, 2026

This is a Glock 17 Gen5 MOS built to win stages in USPSA and IDPA Carry Optics, not to sit in a display case. It runs the Trijicon RMR Type 2, the factory GLOCK Performance Trigger, 10-8 Performance optic-height irons for co-witness, and 21-round Magpul PMAG GL9 magazines to cut reloads on a field course.

Every part here is chosen to stay division-legal while shaving time. The GLOCK Performance Trigger keeps the factory Safe Action system, so it clears duty and Carry Optics rules that scrutinize aftermarket safeties. There is no compensator and no ported barrel, because either one bumps you straight to Open division; this gun is built to stay in Carry Optics.

Every component below shows a live price and loads into the builder in one click, so you can trade the optic, trigger, or magazines and watch the total move before you commit.

Base platform

Why this build

The Glock 17 Gen5 MOS is the default Carry Optics host for good reason: 17+1 capacity, a full-size sight radius, the flared Gen5 magwell for faster reloads, and a factory MOS slide that mounts a dot without sending the slide out for milling. It is the most proven, most supported competition-legal 9mm platform you can buy, and it shoots the same year after year.

The Trijicon RMR Type 2 is the benchmark pistol dot for a reason: its forged 7075-T6 housing survives the slide cycling that kills lesser optics, and it created the RMR footprint that nearly every optic-ready slide and adapter plate is cut for. Under a par time, a dot that never fails to be there is worth more than any feature. The GLOCK Performance Trigger is the smart trigger call because it delivers a flat face, a defined wall, and a short reset at roughly 5 lb while keeping the entire factory safety system intact, which matters when a range officer or a division rulebook looks at your gun.

The supporting parts finish the job. The 10-8 Performance optic-height sights are the USPSA Carry Optics iron standard, serrated to kill glare under stage lights and 4140 steel so they outlast aluminum sets, giving you a co-witness backup through the RMR. The 21-round PMAG GL9 mags add four rounds over a factory 17 and still drop free, so you reload less on a field course. Note that external magwells are banned in Carry Optics and Production, which is why this build does not add one.

Trijicon RMR Type 2
Trijicon RMR Type 2

$579.99 at Optics Planet · In stock

The Trijicon RMR Type 2 is the gold-standard competition pistol dot: a forged 7075-T6 housing that survives slide cycling, and the RMR footprint that the Glock MOS plate system is built around. The 3.25 MOA dot is the duty and precision choice, while the 6.5 MOA offers faster acquisition; battery life runs 4+ years on a CR2032.

Budget swapHolosun 507C X2$232.99

Choose the Holosun 507C X2 to save significantly and gain the 32 MOA circle-dot MRS reticle and solar failsafe, all on the same RMR footprint.

AlternativeTrijicon RCR$778.99

Choose the Trijicon RCR for an enclosed emitter and a top-loading battery that preserves zero on swaps, still on the RMR footprint.

Pistol Triggers

GLOCK Performance Trigger (GPT)
GLOCK Performance Trigger (GPT)

$109.49 at Optics Planet · In stock

The GLOCK Performance Trigger is the division-safe upgrade: a factory flat-face shoe with a roughly 5 lb pull, a defined wall, and a short reset, all while retaining the Glock Safe Action System. Because it is designed and warrantied by Glock, it clears Carry Optics and duty scrutiny that aftermarket safeties can invite.

AlternativeOverwatch Precision DAT Flat Face Trigger$98.99

Choose the Overwatch DAT flat-face trigger for reduced pre-travel and a lighter competition feel if your division allows aftermarket trigger components.

10-8 Performance Optic-Height Sight Set (Glock)
10-8 Performance Optic-Height Sight Set (Glock)

$94.25 MSRP

The 10-8 Performance optic-height sight set is the Carry Optics iron standard, built to co-witness through an RMR-footprint dot. The serrated rear kills glare under stage lights and the 4140 steel construction outlasts aluminum, while a .315-inch extra-tall front is available for MOS red dots.

Choose the AmeriGlo GL-429 suppressor-height sights for a lower-cost lower-third co-witness baseline that still clears the RMR.

Magazines & Feeding

Magpul PMAG 21 GL9
Magpul PMAG 21 GL9

$18.75 at Optics Planet · In stock

The Magpul PMAG 21 GL9 adds four rounds over a factory 17-round magazine in a body that still drops free, so you run fewer reloads on a field course. If you shoot Carry Optics or Limited, gauge your loaded magazines against the 141.25mm length gauge, since extended tubes can exceed it.

Budget swapGlock OEM G17 Magazine 17-Round$39.89

Choose factory Glock 17-round magazines for the reliability benchmark and a length that clears the 141.25mm gauge comfortably.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a Glock 17 legal for USPSA Carry Optics?
Carry Optics allows a slide-mounted red dot like the Trijicon RMR, suppressor- or optic-height iron sights, and internal trigger work, but it bans external magwells and any compensator or ported barrel. This Glock 17 Gen5 MOS build stays legal by running a dot, 10-8 optic-height irons, and the factory-safe GLOCK Performance Trigger with no magwell and no comp.
Why not add a compensator to a competition Glock?
A compensator or a ported barrel moves you out of Carry Optics and Limited and into Open division, where you compete against full race guns with large optics and heavy comps. This build deliberately runs an unported factory barrel to stay in Carry Optics, where a stock-ish Glock 17 is competitive.
Is the GLOCK Performance Trigger good for competition?
Yes. The GLOCK Performance Trigger gives a flat face, a defined wall, and a short reset at about 5 lb, which is a real improvement over the standard Glock trigger, and it keeps the factory Safe Action system so it stays division- and duty-legal. Competitors who want a lighter pull and can run aftermarket components often step to the Overwatch DAT trigger.
How many rounds can I run in a Carry Optics magazine?
Carry Optics and Limited use the 141.25mm magazine-length gauge rather than a fixed round count, so capacity depends on how many rounds fit within that length. A 21-round PMAG GL9 gives more rounds per stage than a factory 17, but you should gauge loaded magazines because extended tubes can exceed 141.25mm. USPSA Production is different: it caps at 15 loaded rounds and uses a box test.
What red dot should I put on a competition Glock 17?
The Trijicon RMR Type 2 is the proven benchmark, with a forged housing that survives slide cycling and the footprint the Glock MOS plates are built for. The Holosun 507C X2 is the value pick on the same footprint, adding a 32 MOA circle-dot reticle and solar backup, and the enclosed Trijicon RCR is the choice if you want the emitter sealed against debris.
