Overview

The Ballistic Advantage 12.5" 8.6 Blackout barrel is the compact suppressed-subsonic length, the configuration that plays to the cartridge's strengths. A shorter barrel keeps the package maneuverable, and 8.6's heavy subsonic loads lose almost nothing in a 12.5-inch tube because the powder charge burns efficiently at that length. Build it into an AR-10 pistol or register a Form 1 SBR, and with a .338-rated can on the muzzle it is one of the quietest big-bore configurations available.

This barrel uses a conventional 5/8x24 muzzle thread rather than the M18x1.5 that Faxon and Bear Creek use on their 8.6 barrels. That matters: 5/8x24 is the thread most .338-rated suppressors and muzzle devices already use, so a 5/8x24 barrel often mounts a can directly without an adapter. Confirm your suppressor's mount before buying either way.

It is cut from 416R stainless steel with a DRP (Dimpled Recon Profile) contour and 1:3 twist. 8.6 Blackout runs on a standard .308 bolt face, so this barrel drops into any AR-10/DPMS-pattern build with a conventional .308 BCG, a pistol-length gas system, and SR-25 magazines.

Key Features

  • 12.5" pistol-length barrel for a compact suppressed 8.6 Blackout build
  • 1:3 twist for the full subsonic .338 load range
  • 416R stainless steel with a DRP contour
  • Conventional 5/8x24 muzzle thread, the most common .338 suppressor pitch
  • Pistol-length gas system
  • Drops into a standard AR-10/DPMS build on a .308 bolt face

Pros

  • +12.5" is the compact length that suits 8.6's suppressed-subsonic mission
  • +5/8x24 thread matches most .338-rated cans without an adapter
  • +416R stainless handles sustained suppressed fire
  • +Standard .308 bolt face keeps it in the mainstream AR-10 ecosystem

Cons

  • Sub-16" length requires a pistol/brace configuration or a Form 1 SBR
  • Stripped barrel; you supply the upper, BCG, gas block, and handguard
  • 8.6 Blackout ammunition is expensive and frequently out of stock
  • Stainless throat erodes faster than chrome lining under heavy volume
