Standard USGI A2 pistol grip, the baseline every aftermarket grip replaces
The A2 pistol grip has been standard issue from the M16A2 through the M4A1 and every mil-spec parts kit on the market. Injection-molded from fiber-reinforced polymer, it features a 25-degree grip angle, checkered side panels, and a molded finger groove on the front strap. A hollow cavity in the grip body stores a small cleaning kit or battery, capped by a friction-fit plug that has a reputation for vanishing into the field.
The 25-degree angle positions the wrist at a moderate rearward cant that works adequately for most shooters but excels for none. The finger groove dictates hand placement in a way that feels natural for medium-sized hands and awkward for everyone else. The checkered texture provides some grip but smooths out quickly with use, and the hard polymer offers zero cushioning against sustained fire or cold weather.
For a budget build where every dollar matters, the A2 grip does its job. It holds your hand in the right general area and costs less than a burger. But for any build that will see regular range time, defensive use, or competition, the A2 is the first part that should be replaced. The ergonomic improvement from even a $20 aftermarket grip is disproportionate to the cost.
Add the A2 Mil-Spec Pistol Grip to your build and see how it enhances your platform.
