Overview

The Smith & Wesson M&P15 Sport III is the current-production successor to the old Sport II entry rifle. The catalog ID is preserved for route stability, but the user-facing row now follows the current SKU 13807 spec: 16-inch 5.56 NATO/.223 Rem barrel, 1:8 5R rifling, mid-length gas system, 15-inch M-LOK handguard, and a six-position adjustable stock.

That change matters because the older Sport II copy mixed legacy 1:9/polymer-handguard details with a product that buyers are more likely to see today as the Sport III. The Sport III layout gives a more modern accessory path out of the box: free-float-style M-LOK handguard space for a light and sling mount, a flatter-top optic setup, and a twist rate that is more flexible with common 55- to 77-grain 5.56 loads.

For a first AR-15, the Sport III sits in a useful middle lane: more modern than old fixed-front-sight budget carbines, but still priced as an entry rifle. Treat Sport II closeout deals and Sport III deals separately in future price tracking because their handguard, twist, and gas-system specs are not the same.
