The VHS-2 Project
Forward-mounted bolt release that lets the support hand close the bolt without leaving the firing grip.
The Springfield Hellion's bolt release sits behind the magwell, which forces a long reach back from a bullpup firing grip to release the bolt forward after a reload or bolt lock-back. The VHS-2 Project Forward Bolt Release Gen 2 (FBR Gen 2) addresses this by adding a paddle under the handguard that operates the bolt release through a linkage. The support hand never leaves the handguard and the firing hand never leaves the grip.
The Gen 2 part is a redesign of the original FBR with broader fitment across current US production Hellions. The VHS-2 Project still sells the original FBR for older variants. Standalone FBR component is $90 for installation on aftermarket rails; the complete Gen 2 ships from $119.99. Cosmetic blem units are listed at $60 when available, which is the cheapest path onto the part.
The FBR is the second-most discussed Hellion upgrade after the Black Talon trigger work. Pair it with the Manticore Arms Enhanced Bolt Release for redundant access from both the receiver and the handguard, or skip the receiver upgrade if you commit fully to the forward operation.
