Springfield Armory
The factory 20-round steel M1A magazine; the reliability baseline every M1A owner should stock first.
Magazines are the highest-ROI, do-it-first M1A purchase, and the factory Springfield 20-rounder is the reliability baseline. The M1A feeds from a rock-and-lock detachable box magazine, and the platform is more magazine-sensitive than an AR; the factory steel magazine is the known-good reference that always runs. Buy several of these before spending on optics, stocks, or triggers.
The body is steel with a blued finish, and the current MA5021 generation magazine also feeds the 6.5 Creedmoor M1A in addition to .308/7.62 NATO. Capacities run from 5 to 20 rounds; the 20-round is the standard duty and range capacity. Factory mags are not the cheapest option on the shelf, but on a magazine-sensitive rifle the few extra dollars buy guaranteed function.
For shooters loading aftermarket magazines into the rotation, Check-Mate is the USGI-spec alternative worth trusting. Avoid the bargain-bin no-name M1A magazines, which are the single most common cause of feeding problems on an otherwise reliable rifle.
