Overview

The EOTech 512 is the entry point to EOTech's holographic weapon sight line and the most widely sold EOTech variant in the civilian market. It uses the same 68 MOA ring with center 1 MOA dot reticle as the duty-grade EXPS3 but runs on 2x AA batteries rather than CR123 lithium, and lacks the EXPS3's night vision settings.

The holographic reticle is the technical advantage over LED-projected red dots: the reticle floats on the glass without parallax, remains visible even if the front window is partially obscured by mud or cracks, and acquires faster in CQB than a single dot for most shooters. The 68 MOA ring brackets a man-sized target at ~10 yards for instinctive aiming. The 512 lacks the side-button locking knobs of the EXPS3 and uses a vertical battery compartment that pushes the optic farther forward on the rail.

For a recreational shooter who wants a real EOTech without the EXPS3 price tag, the 512 delivers 90 percent of the experience for half the price. Caveats: AA batteries last roughly 600 hours at moderate brightness vs. the EXPS3's 1,000+ hours on CR123, the optic is not night vision compatible, and the longer body footprint blocks more rail real estate. Made in the USA.

Key Features

  • 65 MOA ring with 1 MOA center dot holographic reticle
  • Runs on 2x AA batteries (lithium AA recommended)
  • Approximately 2,500 hours on lithium AA at brightness setting 12 (2,200 hours on alkaline)
  • 20 brightness settings (no night vision compatibility)
  • Water resistant to 10 feet (3 meters)
  • Side-mounted battery compartment with screw cap
  • Compatible with EOTech G33 and G45 magnifiers

Pros

  • +Authentic holographic technology with parallax-free reticle
  • +AA battery convenience for users who avoid CR123 lithium
  • +Cheapest path into the EOTech ecosystem
  • +Reticle remains visible with damaged front window
  • +Made in the USA with two-year warranty

Cons

  • Not night vision compatible (requires 552 or EXPS3 for NVG use)
  • Heavier than micro red dots at 11.5 oz
  • Longer rail footprint than micro reflex sights
  • AA battery life materially shorter than CR123 EOTech variants
  • EOTech's 2015 thermal-drift recall history is worth understanding before buying
