Overview

The Dark Storm DS-15 Typhoon Fixed Magazine is an AR-15 engineered specifically for sale in Washington, California, New York, Maryland, New Jersey, and Connecticut. The lower receiver is a 7075 billet unit with Dark Storm's patented fixed-magazine system: a 10-round polymer magazine is permanently affixed to the lower, which sidesteps Washington's HB 1240 ban on semi-automatic rifles with detachable magazines and one or more banned features. Loading is done through the top of the receiver with the bolt locked back, similar to a Garand or M14 stripper-clip workflow.

The rifle ships with a 16-inch SOCOM-profile barrel (also offered in 14.5" mid-length and a .300 BLK pistol-length variant), a 13-inch M-LOK handguard, full ambi controls (safety, mag release, bolt catch), and Magpul DT furniture (transitioning from Hogue overmolded). Available in Black Anodized, FDE, OD Green, and Copperhead Brown Cerakote. This is the rifle to buy if you want AR-15 ergonomics, AR-15 trigger options, and a real defensive carbine in a state where the standard configuration is no longer for sale.

Key Features

  • Patented fixed 10-round polymer magazine welded to 7075 billet lower
  • 16" SOCOM barrel (1:7 twist) chambered in 5.56 NATO with carbine-length gas system
  • 13" free-float M-LOK handguard for lights, slings, and accessories
  • Full ambidextrous controls: safety selector, magazine release, bolt catch
  • Magpul DT stock and grip (replacing Hogue overmolded furniture as of 03/2026)
  • Top-load through the receiver with bolt locked back
  • Cerakote color options: FDE, OD Green, Copperhead Brown plus Black Anodized

Pros

  • +The most direct AR-15 substitute that's still legal to buy in Washington post-HB 1240
  • +Real AR ergonomics, AR triggers, and AR optic mounts on a compliant lower
  • +Pantel Tactical (Lacey, WA) stocks these locally so no FFL transfer hassle
  • +Premium 7075 billet lower and Magpul/Cerakote spec for the price

Cons

  • Top-load workflow is meaningfully slower than a detachable-mag reload
  • 10-round capacity is a hard ceiling; no aftermarket extension is legal
  • Aftermarket parts must avoid converting it to detachable-mag operation
  • Premium pricing vs a standard PSA AR that you cannot buy new in WA
