Overview

The Glock 17 Gen6 is the most significant redesign since the Gen4. Announced December 2025 and shipping January 2026, Gen6 addresses the longstanding ergonomic complaints about the Glock platform while adding factory optics-ready capability as standard across the entire lineup — no separate MOS model required.

The frame gets the most attention: an integrated palm swell fills the grip, an undercut trigger guard eliminates the notorious Glock knuckle and allows a higher grip position, and an enlarged beavertail prevents slide bite while directing the hand consistently to the same point. The RTF6 texture combines two grip patterns in one — aggressive enough for control, comfortable enough for extended training sessions. Extended thumb rests on both sides help smaller-handed shooters reach the trigger without shifting their grip.

Mechanically, Glock reverted to a single captive recoil spring (replacing Gen5's dual assembly), chamfered the barrel hood geometry differently, and added a flat-faced trigger as standard. The flat-face geometry brings the trigger shoe closer, which helps shorter-fingered shooters reach without shifting grip — but the pull itself is a step back from Gen5, with a mushier wall and less distinct reset. The new barrel is not cross-compatible with Gen5. Three polymer optic mounting plates ship in the box, covering RMR/SRO, DeltaPoint Pro, and other major footprints. The beavertail is integrated into the frame permanently — no backstrap options like Gen3/4.

Key Features

  • Optics-ready standard — three plates included
  • Flat-faced trigger standard (no upgrade needed)
  • Undercut trigger guard eliminates Glock knuckle
  • Integrated palm swell for full-hand grip
  • Enlarged beavertail prevents slide bite
  • RTF6 dual-pattern grip texture with extended coverage
  • Single captive recoil spring (revised from Gen5 dual)
  • 17+1 standard capacity

Pros

  • +Optics-ready out of the box — no MOS upcharge
  • +Flat-faced trigger improves reach for shorter trigger fingers
  • +Undercut trigger guard enables higher grip without pain
  • +Palm swell and beavertail address top Glock ergonomic criticisms
  • +Glock legendary reliability maintained
  • +Direct plate mounting — no adapter height added

Cons

  • Flat-faced trigger is a step back from Gen5 — wall is mushier, reset less distinct
  • Beavertail is fixed to the frame — not swappable like Gen3/4 backstraps
  • Enlarged beavertail feel is polarizing for shooters who preferred the original profile
  • Gen6 barrel not compatible with Gen5 aftermarket barrels
  • Higher bore axis than competitors like SIG P320
