If you did not buy the G17 Gen5 MOS, an aftermarket slide is the only way to add an optic cut without sending the factory slide out for milling. Why magazines come first: The Glock 17 magazine is one of the most widely produced handgun magazines in the world. Factory OEM magazines are available everywhere, the aftermarket is deep, and prices are low enough that building a ten-magazine training stack costs less than a single premium upgrade part. Stock up before you spend anything else on this pistol.
How many magazines do you need: For everyday carry, two magazines minimum: one in the gun, one on body. For home defense, three to four magazines staged around the home gives you redundancy without logistics complexity. For range work and competition, ten magazines is the practical floor for a full training day without constant reloading breaks. The G17 ships standard with 17 rounds; the 33-round extended magazine is legal federally and useful for competition divisions that allow it.
Cross-compatibility with other Glocks: Glock 17 magazines drop into the Glock 19 and Glock 26 frames but extend below the grip. This is legal and functions reliably; it is a common backup magazine practice. However, Glock 19 15-round magazines do not fill the G17 grip and will leave a gap at the base.
