Overview

The KelTec SUB-SDP is the first pistol version of the SUB2000, and it exists to answer one question: how small can a folding 9mm get before it stops being shootable. The answer is 10 inches folded. The barrel drops from the SUB2000 GEN3's 16.15 inches to 6 inches, deployed length falls from 30.45 inches to 17.7, and the whole gun collapses into the volume of a large handgun case. KelTec's own nickname for it is the "Nub Sub."

An integrated stabilizing brace is standard equipment, and it is what keeps the gun controllable at this size. Under federal law the SUB-SDP is an ordinary Title I pistol: the 2023 ATF brace rule was vacated in federal court and is not being enforced, so it transfers on a 4473 with a NICS check and no ATF paperwork. Several states legislate braces and magazine capacity independently of the federal rule, so check your own before ordering.

The Defender package adds a Vortex Crossfire red dot, a SUB2000 compensator, a front M-LOK magazine holder, and two 27-round Magpul PMAG GL9 magazines over the $599 Standard, which pushes unloaded weight from 3.57 to 4.21 pounds. The receiver is marked GLK MAG and runs Glock-pattern magazines, so anyone with a Glock 17, 19, or 45 already owns spare feed for it.

Key Features

  • Folds to 10 inches with the brace collapsed
  • 6-inch barrel threaded 1/2x28
  • Integrated pistol stabilizing brace
  • Glock-pattern magazine feed, receiver marked GLK MAG
  • M-LOK rail for lights and lasers
  • Vortex Crossfire red dot included (Defender)
  • SUB2000 compensator included (Defender)
  • Front M-LOK magazine holder and two 27-round Magpul PMAG GL9s (Defender)

Pros

  • +10-inch folded length fits a daypack panel the SUB2000 GEN3 cannot
  • +Legally a handgun, which matters where state law splits pistols from rifles
  • +Glock magazine commonality with the most common carry pistols in the country
  • +Threaded 1/2x28 muzzle out of the box
  • +Defender arrives sighted-in-ready with optic, comp, and two 27-round mags

Cons

  • 6-inch barrel gives up velocity and useful range against the 16.15-inch GEN3
  • Defender is $300 over the GEN3 and $200 over the Standard SUB-SDP
  • Brace-equipped pistols are restricted in several states
  • Aftermarket is new next to the SUB2000's decade of parts support
