Overview

The Garrison is Springfield Armory's pitch for the best overall new-production GI-pattern .45 ACP 1911 at a working-man's price. It slots directly between the rock-bottom Tisas imports and the four-figure custom shops, and it does so with a forged carbon-steel frame and slide, a hot-salt blued finish, and full Government dimensions. Where the older Mil-Spec wears a matte Parkerized coat and GI-style sights, the Garrison upgrades to a deep blued finish and low-profile 3-dot sights that are genuinely usable out of the box, which removes the single most common first upgrade on a budget 1911.

The mechanical package is pure Browning: a 5-inch Government barrel, single-action trigger, grip safety, and thumb safety, running the tilting-barrel short-recoil action every 1911 since 1911 has copied. The 5-inch barrel gives the longest sight radius in the standard 1911 format, and at roughly 37 ounces of forged steel the Garrison soaks up .45 ACP recoil into a slow, controllable push rather than a snap. The blued PX9420 reviewed here is the canonical model; Springfield also offers the Garrison in a stainless PX9420S variation at $927 MSRP for shooters who want corrosion resistance without an aftermarket refinish.

Government dimensions are the practical headline. Every standard 1911 part, triggers, sights, grips, grip safeties, thumb safeties, barrels, and bushings, fits the Garrison the way it fits any mil-spec-dimensional 1911, so this is a sound base for a shooter who intends to build over time. The Garrison ships with one 7-round GI-pattern single-column magazine; 8-round magazines from Wilson Combat, Chip McCormick, and Tripp Research are direct drop-in replacements that add a round with no fitting. Stock up early, because magazine quality is the single biggest driver of 1911 reliability.
