Hornady Precision Hunter 6.5mm Creedmoor 143 grain Extremely Low Drag - eXpanding Brass Cased Centerfire Rifle Ammo, 20 Rounds, 81499
Hornady's Precision Hunter 143-grain ELD-X is a common hunting load for 6.5 Creedmoor, built around a high-BC expanding bullet for medium-game use. The ELD-X (Extremely Low Drag, eXpanding) bullet uses the same Heat Shield tip technology as the match-grade ELD Match, and Hornady lists this load at 2,700 fps, 2,315 ft-lbs, and 0.625 G1 BC. Where it differs from match ammunition is terminal construction: the ELD-X features Hornady's InterLock ring, a raised belt inside the jacket that helps keep the core and jacket together during expansion.
This dual-performance design solves the fundamental challenge of hunting bullet engineering. At close range (inside 200 yards), impact velocities exceed 2,400 fps and the bullet's nose section shears away in a controlled manner, creating a large wound channel while the retained rear section continues penetrating. At extended range (400-900+ yards), where impact velocities drop below 2,000 fps, the Heat Shield tip still initiates expansion reliably, and the InterLock ring ensures the bullet holds together for adequate penetration. Hornady publishes verified expansion data showing the ELD-X performs from roughly 1,600 fps impact velocity up through 3,000+ fps, covering virtually every practical hunting scenario.
Loaded to 2,700 fps from a 24-inch barrel with 2,315 ft-lbs of muzzle energy, the 143 ELD-X gives hunters a high-BC factory option for deer, antelope, and similar medium game. As with any hunting load, confirm accuracy, impact velocity, and terminal-performance expectations in the rifle and distance window you actually plan to use.
